They Won't Stay Dead: Ancient Movie Promo Sites

For some reason, it?s been a rule on the Web for ages that studios leave official movie sites up way past their expiration dates. Some are WAY, WAY past. I?ve never been able to figure out why, but I?m glad these time capsules still exist to let us know how far the aesthetics of the Web have come in a very short time (Dig that ?frameset? in the URL!). I actually like the Lost World site. It?s a pretty neat conceit for a film done that long ago.

Battlefield Earth ? http://battlefieldearth.warnerbros.com/00_site.html

Do you know of other movie sites that refuse to die?

Elephants race, play soccer in Nepal festival

Soccer-playing elephants used all four feet and even their trunks trying to score goals. Racing pachyderms thundered to the finish line to the cheers of the crowds. And in the elephant beauty pageant, contestants sported nail polish on their not-so-dainty toes.

It was all part of an elephant-themed festival in Nepal that wrapped up Wednesday. The three-day event was held to promote conservation awareness and lure foreign visitors to Nepal.

The elephants were trained for weeks for the games, taking time off their normal jobs carrying tourists through protected jungles near Chitwan. The conservation forest has rhinos, several species of deer and crocodiles and is a popular tourist spot some 106 miles south of the capital, Katmandu.

"We hope that the elephant festival will help bring more tourists to Chitwan. We need both foreign and domestic visitors," said Ghanashyam Shrestha, one of the organizers.

Tourism is picking up in Nepal as it slowly recovers from a 10-year Maoist insurgency that killed more than 13,000 people. The conflict ended after the rebels gave up their armed revolt and joined a peace process in 2006.

But the tourists who mainly come to hike the Himalayan country's many mountains aren't returning fast enough for some. Nepal received some 600,000 visitors in 2010, short of the goal of 1 million set by the government declaring the Nepal Tourism Year.

Organizers of events like the elephant festival ? which draws on a popular elephant polo event held elsewhere in Nepal ? hope more colorful events will increase interest in tourism.

The final event, a 300-meter race, was won by an elephant named Bajadur Gaj, who pounded his way to the finish line in 69 seconds as thousands of locals and foreign tourists cheered.

Story: On your mark, get set, trot! Woman races her pet camel

Teams of four elephants also played soccer matches using a standard-size ball . The elephants blocked passes, kicked the ball and batted it with their trunks, pushing each other for control of the play.

"Training the elephants to play soccer was not easy but they learned the basic command. They understood they need to hit the ball when I yell 'kick' at them," said Basudev Mahato, 37, an elephant mahout who has been training and riding elephants for 15 years.

The elephants are between 4 and 5 years old. Young ones are easier to train and run faster, Mahato said.

At the Hattishar elephant camp, trainers and workers cleaned up the elephants, fed them a special meal of rice and sugar wrapped in grass and painted them to prepare them for the event.

Over at the beauty pageant, a trainer painted white patterns on an elephant named Loktantrakali, then varnished her toenails bright red.

Judges ? who checked contestants bodies' for scars and overall beauty and also watched them perform tricks ? picked Loktantrakali as the second-prize winner.

'500 Days of Summer' stars sing together

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

Summer's back!

Kinda. The "500 Days of Summer" costars have reunited on screen, except this time, instead of going through an emotional rollercoaster, Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt sing a sweet tune together.

The darling duo, looking casual and comfortable, sit in front of the camera with ukulele and guitar, ready to give us a mini performance. And we'll tell you right now, our hearts melted.

READ: Karaoke Fan Surprised by Drake: "It Was a Total Hollywood Moment"

Deschanel kicks off their cover of jazz singer Nancy Wilson's, "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" with her hypnotizing voice, which is soon followed by Gordon-Levitt sharing his singing chops (which only makes him that much sexier).

She & Him's female half posted the video on her website HelloGiggles, and wrote, "I have known Joe Gordon-Levitt for going on 12 years. We first met in the summer of 2000 while doing a tiny movie called Manic, where we bonded over a mutual appreciation for Harry Nilsson and Nina Simone and I have been lucky enough to call him one of my dearest friends ever since.

"When we did '500 Days of Summer' 8 years later, we spent every lunch hour dancing to Marvin Gaye in the hair and makeup trailer; we had loads of fun. I hope to do a thousand more movies with him because he's simply the best. But in the meantime, we made a little New Year's duet for all of you! The original?by Nancy Wilson. ENJOY! Don't forget to check out Joe's website http://hitrecord.org/"

We know 'New Girl' star Zooey just separated from her hubby?and who knows what J.G.L is up to with the ladies?these days, but deep inside, we kinda (and by kinda we mean really) hope that one day we'll write a "new couple alert" story on these two.

PFT: Giants' Pierre-Paul makes NFC Pro Bowl team

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees celebrates after his team defeated the Atlanta Falcons in New OrleansReuters

The Saints can still improve their playoff position by one spot, if they beat the Panthers and the 49ers somehow lose to the Rams in St. Louis.? (In the same way that the Saints, you know, somehow lost in St. Louis.)? Both games will be played at the same time, which could prompt Saints coach Sean Payton to do some scoreboard-watching, given that two of his key players ? cornerback Malcolm Jenkins and tight end Jimmy Graham ? suffered injuries in a meaningless regular-season finale in 2010.

The fact that quarterback Drew Brees sits only 190 yards ahead of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady raises the stakes.? Since the Pats need to beat the Bills to claim the No. 1 seed (the other contenders, the Ravens and Steelers, play at 4:15 p.m. ET), Brady will likely play most if not all of the game, and he could easily swipe the record if Brees plays less than 60 minutes.

On Tuesday, Payton addressed the situation, ultimately explaining that he?ll make a decision later in the week.? He dropped no specific hints as to the direction in which he?s leaning, but the bulk of his comments suggests that Brees and the rest of the regulars will play.

?I know I am twice shy when the ball comes near me on the sidelines,? Payton told the local media as to the possibility of getting gets injured in a meaningless game.? ?I have been bitten.? I think we just have to be smart.? We are playing well, with some momentum.? Each year is different.? We will look at that closely.?

Payton said he doesn?t know whether he?ll have someone keep an eye on the 49ers-Rams game.? ?Last year, we tried to go that route of paying attention to the game,? Payton said.? ?One of the challenges always is your roster to begin with.? You guys know that.? We sat players before.? It?s always hard because you don?t really have enough.? It?s not the preseason where you have 80, you only have 53.? We will try to do what is best for the team.?

But is it best for the team to have Brees hold off Brady?? Payton has a strong sense of history, but whether Brees holds the single-season passing yardage record for six days or 60 years has zero relevance to the team?s goals.

?I?m not really aware of the space between the two,? Payton said.? ?I am probably better off not knowing.? That being said, what we have to do is keep playing.? The playoffs are close.? How do we put ourselves in the best position to play well and put ourselves in an opportunity to win a championship?? That?s not always what is popular.? Two years ago in 2009, a lot of people in this room criticized us for resting players at Carolina.? It was what we needed to do as a team.? You make decisions.? They are not always right.? You try to make them with the right things to help your team.? Last night was one of those situations.? This upcoming game will be one of those situations.? It?s part of what we do.? It?s part of coaching.? It?s part of sport.?

Setting ? and holding ? records is part of what they do, too.? If Payton didn?t know the space between the two players, he likely will.? Even if he doesn?t know the number, he surely senses that it?s close enough to compel Brees to play a full game.

And so I?d be shocked if Brees and the rest of the starters don?t play a full game.? With Brees unlikely to wrest the MVP award from Aaron Rodgers, setting ? and keeping ? that record arguably becomes more important to Brees, to Payton, and to the rest of the franchise.

Putin resists rerun; Kremlin ideologist out (AP)

MOSCOW ? Facing a swelling wave of public anger over fraud-tainted elections, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday rejected demands for a rerun of the vote, while the Kremlin reassigned the architect of his tightly controlled political system to a job with no apparent domestic political duties.

The order by President Dmitry Medvedev to make Vladislav Surkov a deputy prime minister in charge of economic modernization was variously interpreted as a sign that leaders recognize the need for significant reform and as a cosmetic move with little meaning.

Allegations of fraud in the Dec. 4 national parliamentary election sparked a wave of protests unprecedented in post-Soviet Russia, including two vast rallies in Moscow that attracted tens of thousands. Putin, who was president in 2000-2008, seeks to return to the Kremlin in elections in March, and the protests have undermined his image as the inevitable winner.

Putin and Medvedev have sought to dilute the protests by rolling out a set of proposed political reforms, but have firmly resisted the protest leaders' main demand that the parliament elections be annulled and rerun. Opposition forces also say the proposed reforms are too little and too late.

In a meeting with supporters Tuesday, Putin again took a tough line on the election, saying "there can't be any talk about reviewing it" ? a position likely to lead to more protests.

The protesters have not only denounced the elections, but the entire so-called "managed democracy" political system implemented under Putin, under which parties that do not take their cues from the Kremlin or United Russia have been forced to the far sidelines.

Surkov, whose formal title had been deputy chief of the presidential administration, was seen as the developer of that system. He also is believed to be the creator of the intensely pro-Putin Nashi youth movement despised by the opposition.

Former Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin, a close Putin associate, was quoted by the state news agency RIA Novosti as saying The decision about the departure of Surkov, which I understand was made by Putin and Medvedev, is a very serious order for the renovation of the political system."

But in the view of Mikhail Prokhorov, the tycoon and New Jersey Nets owner who plans to run against Putin in March, "what happened today is no more than the moving of people from one office to another."

Putin on Tuesday urged his supporters to ensure fairness of the presidential vote to prevent any possible criticism, and discussed details of his proposal to put web cameras at all polling stations. He also suggested that all ballot boxes be made transparent.

"As a candidate, I don't need any vote-rigging," Putin said. "I want the election to be maximally transparent. I want to rely on people's will."

Alexei Navalny, an anti-corruption lawyer and popular blogger who has been a key driving force behind the latest protests, vowed that up to a million demonstrators would take to the streets before the presidential election.

Although Putin is seen as still the strongest candidate in the presidential elections, recent polls suggest his support his not enough to win an outright victory in the first round.

His United Russia party retained a slim majority in parliament in the December elections, but lost about 25 percent of its seats. The party's electoral performance, which protesters say would have been even weaker in an honest count, has galvanized opposition forces that were long marginalized under Putin.

Prince Philip in hospital as royals mark Christmas (AP)

LONDON ? Britain's royal family celebrated Christmas on Sunday with one notable absence ? Queen Elizabeth II's husband Prince Philip, who remains hospitalized following a heart procedure.

The 90-year-old prince was recovering from having a coronary stent put in after doctors determined the heart pains that sent him to the hospital on Friday were caused by a blocked artery.

Buckingham Palace said "he's in good spirits" and family members will visit Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, in the hospital after lunch.

The royal family's Christmas schedule kicked off with a traditional morning service at St. Mary Magdelene Church, on the queen's sprawling Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The huge crowds that gathered outside the church got an early peek when the royals made a quick private visit to the church ahead of the services. Less than two hours later, they were back ? in different clothes ? for the Christmas service.

The Queen arrived first ? dressed in a lavender-colored coat and hat ? in a royal limousine, leading the way into the church. Her oldest son, Prince Charles, and his wife, Camilla, trailed behind.

Prince Harry walked in with his brother William and new sister-in-law Kate_ now known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate, whose style is closely watched around the world and who sends any dress she wears flying off the shelves in Britain, wore an eggplant-colored coat and matching hat.

Among the other royals present was the queen's granddaughter, Zara Philips, who was joined by her new husband Mike Tindall, an English rugby player.

After the service, children lined up to give bouquets of flowers to the queen. Thanking each well-wisher, the queen then handed the bouquets to her granddaughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Well-wisher Camilla Fitt, 71, said Charles told her that his father, Philip, was "very determined" to get well.

"Charles said he is coming on," said Fitt.

The royal family then traveled back to the house for lunch, an integral part of their celebration.

Another key part of their Christmas festivities is the queen's annual message to the nation, which this year will focus on family and community.

The 85-year-old queen has made a prerecorded Christmas broadcast on radio since 1952 and on television since 1957. She writes the speeches herself, and the broadcasts mark the rare occasion on which the queen voices her own opinion without government consultation.

Mexico nabs drug lord's security boss

By the CNN Wire Staff

updated 12:12 PM EST, Mon December 26, 2011

Members of the Mexican army escort Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Monday in Mexico City.

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alleged drug kingpin's lieutenant handled his security in Durango, Defense Ministry says
  • The arrest will affect Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's Sinaloa cartel, official says
  • Guzman is a billionaire who is wanted in Mexico and the United States

(CNN) -- Mexican army special forces have arrested a top lieutenant for alleged drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Troops arrested Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Friday in "a surgical operation in Cuiliacan" in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, said Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, a Defense Ministry spokesman.

Cabrera, who was responsible for the activities of the Pacific Cartel in Durango and the southern part of the state of Chihuahua, was detained after fleeing from Durango, Trevilla told reporters.

"The analysis of his behavior permitted (us) to find the building where he was hiding" and Cabrera was taken into custody without violence, Trevilla said. Firearms, computer equipment and other documentation were seized, too, he said.

Cabrera, who appeared Monday in the office of a prosecutor who specializes in organized crime, was responsible for Guzman's security in Durango, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

He is charged with possessing firearms reserved for use by the army and falsification of a public document, a spokeswoman for the attorney general said.

Trevilla said Cabrera was involved in kidnappings, extortion and arson.

"The violence caused him to rise within the organization," said Trevilla, who predicted that the arrest will affect the cartel's leadership and abilities.

Guzman, who is under indictment by U.S. authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as one of "the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico." In 2004, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

He is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin.

He is worth about $1 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which began listing him on its billionaires list in 2009. The magazine lists him as No. 55 on its Most Powerful People list and as the only crime lord on its list of Mexico's billionaires.

Girl, 9, was feared missing after flight change (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? A 9-year-old girl flying by herself to visit her grandmother had to change planes unexpectedly, sending her relatives into a panic when her original Southwest Airlines flight landed without her.

Chloe Boyce took off from Tennessee on Tuesday, bound for LaGuardia Airport in New York. Bad weather forced her plane to detour, and the passengers had to change planes. When the plane she was initially on arrived at LaGuardia, family members said it took close to an hour to locate her.

"When I got the text (from her mother) that she wasn't on the plane, and Southwest doesn't know where she is, I started freaking out," said Joseph Kerr, the girl's stepfather.

Southwest spokesman Brad Hawkins said the airline apologized to the family for not letting them know she had changed planes.

Chloe, of Clarksville, Tenn., was accompanied by Southwest employees during her trip, but she said she was a little nervous because nobody told her why she had to get off the plane in Baltimore.

"I was like `I'm supposed to be getting off at LaGuardia. I'm not supposed to get off this plane,'" she said.

Chloe's journey started in Nashville. She was rerouted to Cleveland, then went to Columbus, Ohio, before landing in Baltimore. From there, she made it to New York, 3 1/2 hours later than scheduled. After meeting with her relatives, they drove to her grandmother's house in Danbury, Conn.

Her stepfather is an Army sergeant based at Fort Campbell, Ky., so she is used to traveling, her family said.

"She was definitely more calm than we were," said Elena Kerr, her mother, who reached Chloe by cell phone at the Baltimore airport when she did not show up on time in New York.

Southwest gave the family a $250 flight voucher and refunded the girl's ticket, but Chloe's family has not received an explanation for why the airline did not tell them about the changes. He said they plan to ask the Federal Aviation Administration to require airlines to notify guardians of any changes to flights carrying unaccompanied minors.

Hawkins, the Southwest spokesman, said the airline tries to notify parents of "irregular operations," even though it is not mandatory. He also said the airline tries to avoid such situations by booking unaccompanied minors on itineraries that don't require changing planes.

For the return trip, Joseph Kerr said they will be driving back.

"That way we know where she is, who she is with, and she is safe," he said.

U.S. approves Monsanto drought-tolerant GM corn

WASHINGTON | Thu Dec 22, 2011 12:00pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Monsanto's genetically engineered, drought resistant corn is deregulated, the U.S. Agriculture Department said Thursday, clearing the variety for sale.

USDA approved the variety after reviewing environmental and risk assessments, public comments and research data from Monsanto.

Corn is the most widely grown U.S. crop and farmers grew 91.9 million acres of the feed grain this year, the second-largest area since World War Two.

In its 2009 petition for approval of its GM variety, Monsanto said 40 percent of crop losses in North America are due to sub-optimal moisture.

In a statement, Monsanto said it planned farm trials in the western U.S. Plains in 2012 to demonstrate the variety for growers and to generate data that will help guide Monsanto's commercial decisions.

"Our drought system is designed to help farmers mitigate the risk of yield loss when experiencing drought stress, primarily in areas of annual drought stress," said Hobart Beeghly, U.S. product management leader.

The drought-tolerant trait was part of a collaboration with the German chemical company BASF.

The major U.S. area for adoption of drought-tolerant corn would be the Plains, which produce one-quarter of the U.S. crop, Monsanto estimated, as well as similar dryland regions of Africa, Europe and Latin America.

USDA announced the variety, known as MON 87460, "is no longer considered a regulated article under our regulations governing the introduction of certain genetically engineered organisms."

'A complete and total rebuild'

Still thinking the Cubs are going to get in on Prince Fielder? Think again.?David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com reports that Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer are looking to completely blow things up and that Fielder is not in the offing:

?After speaking with several baseball sources over the past few days I am hearing that a complete and total rebuild of the Cubs is more likely than ever to take place during the remainder of the off-season ? [Sean]?Marshall along with several other players on the Cubs roster are all being shopped as?Theo Epstein,?Jed Hoyer, and company look to maximize their value as they look to completely overhaul the team.?

A weak farm system and no real parts that, right now, could form the core of a World Series winning team are what?s forcing their hand, Kaplan writes.

This obviously has big implications for the Cubs over the next couple of years. But boy howdy does it always have some implications for Prince Fielder?s market this winter. I mean really, where does he go?

2012 Rose Parade "Donate Life Float" To Honor Mid-Southerner

A young man named Michael Gilmore should be planning to celebrate the holidays with his family in Helena West Helena, AR this week. Instead, the 24 year old's image?will be a part of the 2012 Rose Parade's "Donate Life Float" as it rolls through Pasadena, CA on January 2, 2012.

The Mid-Southerner is one of 72 people whose portraits will be featured on the float, honoring those who donated vital organs, tissue or eyes so that countless others might have life.

The young man was full of promise, a 2004 honors graduate of West Helena High School where he had played football, ran track and participated in the JROTC. After high school, ?Michael enrolled at Phillips Community College where he earned his Associates Degree and began dreaming of a career.

A gifted athlete, Michael headed to Jonesboro to earn a degree in Physical Education at Arkansas State University. He juggled his studies, a part-time job at Wal-Mart and a regular referee gig for ASU's intramural sports. Life looked good for the fun loving college student who should have graduated from ASU in December 2010. ?But in a case that has baffled police, Michael was found dead of a gunshot wound in his Jonesboro apartment on April 17, 2010. The case remains unsolved. Police have no suspects.

Michael's body was airlifted to the Regional Medical Center in Memphis where the Gilmore family gathered and confirmed the shocking news. Michael Deon (Rudy) Gilmore was gone. But Michael's mother, Jerlene Gilmore, remembered her son applying for a drivers license and deliberately deciding to sign up for organ donation.

"Why shouldn't I?, I won't need them," Jerlene recalls her son saying. ?

Michael kept a journal which contained the following entry, "the meaning of my life is to help others. I don't have a doubt in my mind that I was put here to help people some way or some how." ?

Michael's journal entry became more prophetic than he could ever have realized. Two of the people who received Michael's vital organs united with his family at Phillips Community College this week to create Michael's "Floragraph," a portrait created with floral materials. Sammy Robinson received Michael's heart; Verna Harris of Memphis received one of Michal's kidneys. They helped decorate Michael's posterized photograph, a floral image that will be affixed to the Donate Life Float and appear before a television audience estimated at more than 47 million at the Rose Parade.

Jerlene Gilmore and Michael's brother Demarcus and sister Kaneisha will travel to Pasadena to witness the moment and honor their loved one's life. ?

In addition to the images, the Donate Life Float will feature 28 living riders, representing donors, transplant recipients and transplant candidates on the waiting list. ??

Randa Lipman, Community Outreach Manager of the Mid-South Transplant Foundation, Inc. has worked hard to tell Michael's story as a means of encouraging more people to sign up for organ donation.

Ms. Lipman said, ?"the main thing we need to do is tell people to register on the Organ and Tissue Donor Registry in their state. Your many viewers?in the Mid-South, can go to our website: www.midsouthtransplant.org and they?ll find links to the Registry?s in TN, AR & MS. People can register every time they get or renew their driver?s license, permit or state ID. They?ll also find the facts about donation as well as myths and misconceptions explained there so they can make an informed decision for themselves and then share that decision with their family."

The Donate Life Float will also carry thousands of roses with personal dedications of love and remembrance in a unique Dedication Garden supported by people around the world---even places far from the parade route like Helena West Helena, AR. ??

Facebook agrees to changes to improve transparency

(AP) ? Facebook Inc. has agreed to make several changes to its services to improve transparency and better protect the personal data of its millions of users outside of the U.S., following an in-depth audit of its international headquarters that was released Wednesday.

The social media company, based in Palo Alto, California, agreed to changes including asking European users if they wanted to partake in its Facial Recognition, reworking its policies of retaining and deleting private data, and reducing the amount of information collected about people who are not logged into Facebook, the company said in response to the report of the Irish Data Protection Commissioner.

Facebook's international headquarters are based in Dublin, Ireland, a member of the European Union. This means the company is required to comply with European data privacy laws, which are more stringent than those that apply in the United States, particularly regarding how long data can be retained.

"Facebook has committed to either implement, or to consider, other 'best practice' improvements recommended by the data protection commissioner," the company said following the announcement of the report. "Meeting these commitments will require intense work over the next six months."

The company has agreed to present its results in a follow-up to the report in July.

Facebook has been scrutinized for its privacy practices in the U.S., too. In November, the company agreed to submit to government audits of its privacy practices every other year for the next two decades as part of a settlement with the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC's complaint had alleged that the company exposed details about users' lives without getting their consent, as legally required.

It is standard for Ireland's data protection commissioner to audit any high-tech companies in the country to ensure that their practices are in keeping with the European law, and make recommendations to help them to meet those standards, should they fall short.

"It is not the object of the audit, to decide whether there is a breach of law," Billy Hawkes, the data protection commissioner, told reporters. "It is to help an organization achieve full compliance with law, put their compliance into best practice.

Facebook has repeatedly come under fire in Europe for a raft of complaints ranging from accusations that it sells personal data to advertisers ? a charge that the Irish authority said its findings did not uphold ? its Friend Finder application and "archiving" of data that users have deleted.

This is especially the case in German-speaking nations, where laws protecting individual privacy and the use of personal information are even more far-reaching than those covering the European Union, where Facebook has run up against several complaints from local data protection authorities.

A group of Austrian students calling themselves Europe vs. Facebook also took up the crusade, filing a series of 22 complaints directly with the Irish authorities in what they said was an attempt to force Facebook to follow the rule of the law.

"We are thrilled," said Max Schrems, 24, who speaks for the group. "It is far more than what has previously been achieved in Europe. There are a lot of things that they have to change, far more than what they have had to change before."

Mediterranean diet gives longer life, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Dec. 20, 2011) ? A Mediterranean diet with large amounts of vegetables and fish gives a longer life. This is the unanimous result of four studies to be published by the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Research studies ever since the 1950s have shown that a Mediterranean diet, based on a high consumption of fish and vegetables and a low consumption of animal-based products such as meat and milk, leads to better health.

Study on older people

Scientists at the Sahlgrenska Academy have now studied the effects of a Mediterranean diet on older people in Sweden. They have used a unique study known as the "H70 study" to compare 70-year-olds who eat a Mediterranean diet with others who have eaten more meat and animal products. The H70 study has studied thousands of 70-year-olds in the Gothenburg region for more than 40 years.

Chance of living longer

The results show that those who eat a Mediterranean diet have a 20% higher chance of living longer.

"This means in practice that older people who eat a Mediterranean diet live an estimated 2 3 years longer than those who don't," says Gianluca Tognon, scientist at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg.

Support from other studies

These results are supported by three further as yet unpublished studies into Mediterranean diets and their health effects: one carried out on people in Denmark, the second on people in northern Sweden, and the third on children.

"The conclusion we can draw from these studies is that there is no doubt that a Mediterranean diet is linked to better health, not only for the elderly but also for youngsters," says Gianluca Tognon.

Gianluca Tognon himself is from Italy, but moved to Sweden and Gothenburg specifically to collaborate with Lauren Lissner's research group at the Sahlgrenska Academy, and develop research into the Mediterranean diet.

Awlaki video urges U.S. Muslims to join al Qaeda (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? U.S.-born al Qaeda militant Anwar al-Awlaki, killed in a CIA drone strike in September, posthumously called on U.S. Muslims to join the group in the Middle East in a video released on Tuesday.

Awlaki, identified by U.S. intelligence as "chief of external operations" for al Qaeda's Yemeni branch and a Web-savvy publicist for the Islamist cause, was killed in a remote Yemeni town by missiles fired from multiple CIA drones.

"You have two choices: either hijra (emigration) or jihad (holy war)," Awlaki said in the video, which was posted on Islamist websites.

"I specifically invite the youth to either fight in the West or join their brothers in the fronts of jihad: Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia.

"I invite them to join us in our new front, Yemen, the base from which the great jihad of the Arabian Peninsula will begin, the base from which the greatest army of Islam will march forth," said Awlaki, a cleric of Yemeni descent, speaking in English.

Awlaki was implicated in a failed attempt by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to bomb a U.S.-bound airliner in 2009, and he had contacts with an American army psychiatrist who killed 13 people at a U.S. military base the same year.

The video included a message to the American people issued by Awlaki in March 2010. But the SITE monitoring service, which tracks jihadist statements, said Awlaki's call to join al Qaeda abroad had not appeared on that tape, although it has since been referred to in an online magazine of al Qaeda's Yemeni wing.

FOLLOWER ARRESTED IN U.S.

In November, New York police arrested a follower of Awlaki on suspicion of building a pipe bomb to use against U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Eloquent in English and Arabic, Awlaki encouraged attacks on the United States and was seen as a man who could draw in more al Qaeda recruits from Western countries.

In Boston, a jury on Tuesday found a Massachusetts man guilty of supporting al Qaeda by translating Arabic messages and supporting militants travelling to Yemen for training.

In Yemen, gunmen shot dead an intelligence officer in the southern province of Lahej, a security official told Reuters, adding that al Qaeda was believed to be responsible.

Separately, security forces arrested seven alleged al Qaeda members who were planning attacks on government installations and officials in the south, the Defence Ministry said.

The men were detained in the town of Ataq, near Abyan province, where militants linked to al Qaeda have seized swathes of territory and challenged a peace accord aimed at pulling the poor country away from civil war.

The deal, brokered by Yemen's richer Gulf neighbors, aims to end a political crisis in which protests have raged for 11 months of protests against President Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia shares U.S. fears that more instability in Yemen could embolden al Qaeda militants there - seen by Washington as the group's most dangerous branch - in a country sitting next to oil shipping routes.

Since Saleh handed over his powers to his deputy under the Gulf peace accord, a new government headed by an opposition leader has been formed. A presidential election is set to be held in February.

Apart from Islamist militants, the new government is facing challenges from a southern separatist movement and a Shi'ite Muslim rebellion in the north.

Social Business Solutions from Social Business Teams - Digital ...

We at Ogilvy have been delivering what we call social business solutions for the past few years. We have a staff mix of social media strategists who themselves come from marketing, digital and communications backgrounds and management consultants. Each brings something valuable to understanding business problems. The consultants have strengths that really surface in the solution design part of an engagement while those with marcom backgrounds also get implementation in a way that most management consultants envy.?

What is social business?

Social media can deliver value to businesses far beyond the narrow application to marketing and communications goals. It can help a workforce be more efficient and productive. It can inform product design and service delivery. It can fuel innovation. It can enable better recruiting and talent management.

We use the term social business to describe the value businesses derive from social media technology and behaviors across the enterprise. Often it implies some type of change or transformation but rarely do businesses come to us expressly asking for change management. That usually comes later once it?s clear that enabling a workforce to become brand advocates, as an example, has all sorts of implications on governance, legal and human resource policies. Even then, we are focused on solving a business problem using social media-related solutions or thinking. ??We see social business solutions falling into four categories:?

Social_business

Why diverse teams?

Jay Baer had an interesting post that questioned whether media and marketing specialists make the best social business solution providers. I believe they are indispensible but I also believe they are just half of the solution. Good management consultants are the other half. These guys and gals understand how to evaluate a business problem, interrogate people, process and organization and then design a solution that is equal parts good design and real politik of implementation. Most marketing experts focus on solving a marketing program completely divorced from the intricacies of an organization. They know how to design and implement great marcom solutions but with no entr?e to change an organization to be more successful at marketing, their assessment of internal politics is done somewhat superficially. ?

Strengths of management consultants

  • Recognizing business problems and opportunities for change
  • Stakeholder interviews and investigation
  • Designing programs aligned with organizational realities and complexity
  • Defining and delivering against business value

Strengths of marcom specialists/social media strategists

  • Understanding the technology and behaviors of social media
  • Designing solutions based upon behavioral economics
  • Implementing programs (not just designing them)
  • Fast, agile execution?

Jay asks,??If you?re a major corporation that?s convinced you need to make some serious changes to prosper in a rapidly shifting future, do you turn to your PR firm, do you turn to a legacy management consulting firm (Bain, Accenture, McKinsey, Deloitte, et al), or do you turn to one of the new breed of specialist firms (Altimeter, Dachis, et al)??

I say they should turn to those who can deliver integrated social solutions and scale them across the enterprise. Experience, cases, methods that combine the best of disciplines ? these are ingredients for a results-oriented business solutions firm. Firms like IBM understand the business potential of social media ? enabling collaboration between employees, connecting a far flung network of experts more directly with customers. They not only embrace social business solutions but have offered to deliver same to their own clients. They are an exception. ?

Right now, most businesses that need social business solutions are discovering that need in the course of more ordinary work, much of it in marketing or employee relations. We work to share best practice social media marketing and communications across 30 markets and end up in a marketing transformation project. So, management firms like McKinsey are not the default right answer. Nor are the pure PR firms with lots of Facebook programs under their belt. This territory remains wide open. Clearly, I am biased to the team we have deployed. That?s why we did it. Time will tell who earns the reputation as the top social business providers.?

Historic visit to Libya by Pentagon chief Panetta (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said "the torch of freedom" has passed to the Libyan people and he pledged during a historic visit Saturday to Tripoli that the United States will do all it can to help the country move toward democracy.

But he and his Libyan hosts acknowledged the threat of Islamic militants gaining ground in this period of political uncertainty following the ouster and death of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi.

Panetta and Libyan leaders identified challenges for the government now forming, including how to gain control of the militias that overthrew Gadhafi during an eight-month civil war.

"This will be a long and difficult transition, but I have confidence that you will succeed in realizing the dream of a representative government," Panetta said during a news conference with Prime Minister Abdurrahim el-Keib.

"The torch of freedom that has passed throughout the centuries and now passes from nation to nation in the Middle East and North Africa burns brightly here in Libya. May it light your way to a future of peace, prosperity and freedom," Panetta said.

While his visit was brief, Panetta made history as the first U.S. Pentagon chief to set foot on Libyan soil.

He evoked U.S. history, too, with a visit to the cemetery presumed to hold remains of U.S. sailors killed in Tripoli harbor in 1804. Their deaths were memorialized in the famous "shores of Tripoli" line in the Marine Corps hymn.

Both Panetta and al-Keeb expressed confidence that the fledgling government will be able to reach out to the militias and bring them together.

"We know how serious this issue is," said al-Keeb, "We realize it is not matter of saying `OK, put down your arms, go back to work or do what you want to do.' We realize that there are lots of things that we need to be organized."

More broadly, Panetta said the revolts across the region represent a quest for sovereignty by the people, but they will all involve different approaches and challenges.

During meetings with the Libyan leaders, Panetta expressed concern about al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb militants gaining a foothold amid the chaos of an unfolding democracy. But they told him that the Libyan people will reject the terrorist group, said a senior defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions were private.

Panetta's motorcade from the airport into the city provided views of the nation's violent past and future promise ? lush orange groves, carcasses of bombed buildings and charred and graffiti-covered compound once occupied by Gadhafi. Flying from rooftops were the green, black and red flags, adorned with a star and a crescent, belonging to the new government.

At one point, amid the graffiti splashed across the walls of Gadhafi's former compound was a short comment in English: "Thanx US/UK."

The visit also put the man who has led much of the U.S. terrorism fight over the past several years at the scene of one of the first American wars on terror, more than two centuries ago.

Panetta went to what historians believe is the gravesite of as many as 13 U.S. sailors killed in 1804, when the Navy ship Intrepid exploded while slipping into Tripoli harbor to attack pirate ships that had captured an American frigate.

As the story goes, governments along the Barbary coast had turned to state-sponsored piracy to raise money, attacking and taking over merchant ships, enslaving their crews and stealing their bounties. Unwilling to pay fees to protect its ships, the U.S. sent the Navy frigate Philadelphia to the region but it ran aground just off Tripoli and was captured.

President Thomas Jefferson sent a team to get the Philadelphia back or destroy it. Under cover of darkness, the Intrepid sailed into the harbor, killed about 25 pirates and burned the Philadelphia.

A few months later, Jefferson sent the Intrepid back to destroy as many of the pirate ships as possible. The plan was to pack the ketch with explosives, sail into the harbor and blow her up.

The 13 sailors never got to their destination. The ship exploded prematurely killing all aboard and the next day bodies washed ashore. They were buried outside Tripoli, but in 1949 the remains were moved to The Protestant Cemetery by the Libyan government.

On Saturday, Panetta walked into the small walled cemetery and slowly made his way to a corner where five large but simple white gravestones mark the graves of the American sailors. Markers on four of the stones read, "Here lies an American sailor who gave his life in the explosion of the United States Ship Intrepid in Tripoli Harbour, Sept. 4, 1804."

Panetta placed a wreath at the site and, after a moment of silence, placed one of his U.S. secretary of defense souvenir coins on top of one of the stones.

New life was breathed into the long-ago tale by Congress this year. Lawmakers, prodded by descendants of the sailors, added provisions to the defense bill ordering the Pentagon to study the feasibility of exhuming the bodies and bringing them home to America.

In a statement, Panetta said the recent effort to restore the cemetery is "a symbol of the values we share."

Officials said that Panetta made no specific offers of assistance to the Libyan leaders, and he told reporters that there was no discussion of providing military equipment or weapons.

"They have to determine what their needs are and what kind of assistance is required," he said. "And whatever they need, the United States will be happy to respond."

Ahead of Panetta's visit, the Obama administration announced it had lifted penalties that were imposed on Libya in February to choke off Gadhafi's financial resources while his government was using violence to suppress peaceful protests.

The U.S. at the time blocked some $37 billion in Libyan assets, and a White House statement said Friday's action "unfreezes all government and central bank funds within U.S. jurisdiction, with limited exceptions."

Gingrich assailed by debate rivals, fights back

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) ? Republican presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich clashed sharply with one rival, took pains to compliment another and said it was laughable for any of them to challenge his conservative credentials Thursday night in the last campaign debate before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses kick off the 2012 primary season.

In a forceful attack, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann said Gingrich "had his hand out and received $1.6 million to influence senior Republicans and keep the scam going in Washington, D.C.," for Freddie Mac, a government-backed housing entity.

"Just not true," Gingrich shot back. "I never lobbied under any circumstances," he added, denying an allegation she had not made.

The clash underscored the state of the race, with Gingrich, the former House speaker, atop the polls in Iowa and nationally, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and his other pursuers work in television ads and elsewhere to overtake him in the final days before the caucuses.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, who has staked his campaign on Iowa, was quick to challenge Gingrich as a conservative leader. He recalled that Gingrich had to contend with a "conservative revolution' from the ranks of Republican lawmakers when he was House speaker in the 1990s.

Romney, who runs second in the polls in Iowa, largely refrained from criticizing Gingrich, despite increasingly barbed attacks in day-to-day campaigning. Instead, he firmly rejected suggestions that he had once favored gay marriage only to switch his position. "I have been a champion of protecting traditional marriage," he said.

Given the stakes, Gingrich, Bachmann and Santorum weren't the only contenders eager to impress Iowa voters and a nationwide television audience with their conservative grit.

"I hope I am the Tim Tebow of the Iowa caucuses," said Texas Gov. Rick Perry, referring to the Denver Broncos quarterback whose passing ability draws ridicule but who has led his team to a remarkable seven wins in eight weeks.

"We're getting screwed as Americans," said former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, insisting that he, in fact, was a steadier conservative than any of the others on stage.

"Anybody up here could beat Obama," said Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, whose views verge on libertarianism and who has struggled to expand his appeal.

And Bachmann, who was quicker than any other candidate to criticize a rival, bristled when challenged repeatedly on the accuracy of her facts. "I am a serious candidate for president of the United States, and my facts are accurate," she said.

Indeed, the big question in the opening moments of a fast-paced two-hour debate went to the heart of a dilemma that could eventually settle the race ? do conservative Republican caucus and primary voters pick a candidate with their hearts, or do they look elsewhere if they judge their favored candidate might not be able to defeat the president.

Those voters begin making that choice on Jan. 3, and if experience is any guide, one or more of the presidential hopefuls on the debate stage will not make it out of the state to compete in the New Hampshire primary a week later.

Gingrich, who seemed an also-ran in the earliest stages of the race, has emerged as a leader heading into the final stretch of the pre-primary campaign.

His decades in Washington and his post-congressional career as a consultant have been the subjects of tough critiques from Romney's campaign in the past week.

But the former speaker passed up an offer to criticize his rival on the issue of Medicare, saying, "I'm not in the business of blaming Gov. Romney." In fact, he said, Romney has made constructive suggestions for preserving the program that tens of millions of Americans rely on for health care yet faces deep financial woes.

Gingrich drew criticism earlier in the year for calling a GOP Medicare proposal "right-wing engineering." Romney refrained from criticizing that plan but did not embrace it in full.

Bachmann, who has long-since faded to the back of the pack in the polls, showed no such reluctance.

When he labeled her charges inaccurate, she shot back that when she made similar contentions in the previous debate, she was judged factually accurate by an independent arbiter. She said Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac was in furtherance of a "grandiose scam" to keep alive an entity at the heart of the housing crisis.

"I will state unequivocally for every person watching tonight: I have never once changed my positions because of any payment," Gingrich said, adding that in fact, he favored breaking up both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, his benefactor.

Moments later, Bachmann challenged Paul even more aggressively, saying his refusal to consider pre-emptive action to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear weapon was dangerous.

"The problem would be the greatest under-reaction in world history if we have an avowed madman who uses that nuclear weapon to wipe nations off the face of the earth," she said, referring to an International Atomic Energy Agency report that said Iran was "within just months of being able to obtain that weapon."

Paul questioned the report. "They have no evidence; there has been no enrichment," he said.

Panetta becomes first defense chief to visit Libya (AP)

TRIPOLI, Libya ? Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has arrived in Tripoli, making history as the first Pentagon chief to ever set foot on Libyan soil.

Panetta's visit Saturday comes just after an eight-month civil war ousted Moammar Gadhafi and set the country on a rocky path to democracy.

The United Nations, the United States and Great Britain announced Friday they are lifting sanctions and unfreezing about 80 billion dollars in assets blocked during Gadhafi's reign.

Panetta will meet with members of the transitional government, and make an emotional visit to what historians believe is the gravesite of 13 U.S. sailors killed in 1804. Those deaths were caused by the explosion of the U.S. ship Intrepid, which was slipping into the Tripoli harbor to destroy pirate ships that had captured an American frigate.

Crew stabilizes leaky Russian ship near Antarctica (AP)

WELLINGTON, New Zealand ? The 32 crew members aboard a leaking Russian fishing ship near Antarctica have made progress stabilizing the vessel, and a plane was scheduled to drop them supplies Saturday. Rescue ships, hampered by heavy sea ice, were still several days away.

The vessel Sparta hit underwater ice Friday, tearing a 1-foot (30-centimeter) hole in the hull and causing it to list at 13 degrees. Maritime New Zealand, which is coordinating rescue attempts, said Saturday that the crew had pumped water from the vessel overnight and moved cargo around, making the boat safer and more stable.

Crew members who had donned emergency suits and boarded life rafts were now back aboard the Sparta, the agency said.

A New Zealand Defence Force C-130 plane was scheduled to drop fuel and equipment, including another water pump, to the vessel later in the day.

The crew members were making patches that they would attach to the hole in the hull if they can get the ship upright, said Chris Wilson, who was coordinating the rescue mission for Maritime New Zealand on Saturday.

"It's a very remote, unforgiving environment," said Andrew Wright, executive secretary of the Australian-based Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources, which has licensed the Sparta to catch toothfish in the Southern Ocean.

Wright said he didn't know what caused the hole, although he added that an iceberg "would be a good candidate."

The Sparta, which is 157 feet (48 meters) long, sent a distress call early Friday. Maritime New Zealand said heavy ice in the Southern Ocean would make it difficult for other ships to reach the vessel.

The Sparta's sister ship Chiyo Maru No. 3 was heading toward the stricken vessel but had no capacity to cut through sea ice, the agency said. A New Zealand vessel, the San Aspiring, had some ice-cutting ability and was also en route, but was still three to four days away on Saturday. A third vessel was much closer, but was hemmed in by heavy ice and unable to move toward the Sparta.

The crew's emergency immersion suits can keep them alive for a time in freezing water, Maritime New Zealand said.

The crew is made up of 15 Russians, 16 Indonesians and one Ukrainian, the agency said.

The weather in the area was calm Saturday, with temperatures a relatively mild 37 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius).

Commission records list the captain of the Sparta, which was built in 1988, as Oleg Pavlovich Starolat, who is Russian.

The Vengeance M90 gaming mouse features 15 fully programmable buttons, arranged and tuned for intuitive operation without compromising your grip, and on-board flash memory lets you save your macros in up to six profiles that can be switched on-the-fly. The Avago Technologies 5700 DPI LaserStream gaming sensor allows on-the-fly resolution adjustment and the programmable lift detection, high-mass scroll wheel, and PTFE glide pads ensure swift, precise movement. The intuitive Windows-based Vengeance software utility lets you manage your macro keys, on-board profiles, and sensor settings so you can customize your M90 to exactly match your gaming style.
