Eurocom Monster 1.0

Other than the Alienware M11xr3 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars), 11-inch gaming laptops have been hard to come by. That is, until now. Eurocom, known for its customized gaming and workstation laptops and desktops, offers the Eurocom Monster 1.0 ($1,605 direct), an 11.6-inch powerhouse that weighs a little under four pounds and delivers formidable frame rates and Core i7 processing power. It doesn't look like a gaming laptop, however, and it doesn't offer the kind of battery life that you'd expect from a laptop of this size, but the Monster 1.0 is packed with the latest technology and is our Editors' Choice for ultraportable gaming laptops.

Design and Features
The Monster 1.0 is based on Clevo's W110ER chassis and measures 11.5 by 8.3 by 1.5 inches (HWD). It weighs just 3.96 pounds, making it one of the lightest gaming-class laptops to hit our labs (the Alienware M11xr3 weighed in at 4.5 pounds). Design-wise, the Monster 1.0 looks more like a business laptop than a gaming rig. The smudge-resistant lid sports a rubbery, matte, black finish with a tight, textured pattern and a shiny silver Eurocom logo in the center. While not unattractive, it lacks the edgy look of the M11x.

The 11.6-inch display has a resolution of 1366 by 768 and a glossy coating that helps give colors some pop but is very reflective (Eurocom also offers a matte screen with this model). Viewing from side angles was decent with only a touch of color shifting beginning at 40 degrees from dead center, but if you tilt the panel forward, the picture washes out and colors lose their pop.

The chiclet-style keyboard is firm and surprisingly easy to type on given its size. You won't find any cool lighting effects here like those found on the Alienware M11x, however, nor will you find any special gaming keys. The touchpad and wrist rest share the same rubbery finish as the lid, which means you don't have to worry about wiping away those pesky fingerprint smudges. The touchpad provides smooth cursor control and the mouse buttons are responsive and relatively quiet.

The left side of the ultraportable holds VGA and HDMI video outputs, two USB 3.0 ports, two audio jacks (headphone and microphone), and an Ethernet port. On the right side is a single USB 2.0 port and the power jack, and there's a 9-in-1 card reader embedded in the front edge of the chassis. A set of small speakers are sufficiently loud but muffled as they are located on the underside of the chassis. However, you can utilize the included Creative THX TruStudio Pro software to tweak the audio settings to your liking. The Monster 1.0 also includes a webcam (embedded in the upper screen bezel), integrated Bluetooth and wireless n connectivity, a 120GB solid-state drive, and graphics with Nvidia's Optimus technology. Eurocom covers the Monster 1.0 with a one-year parts and labor warranty and offers two-year ($165) and three-year ($295) extension plans.

Performance

The Monster 1.0 also made short work of our Handbrake test, encoding our test file in a speedy 1:14, which is a few seconds faster than theY480 (1:17) and around twice as fast as the Alienware M11x r3 (3:33). On our Photoshop CS5 test, the Monster 1.0 scored 4:05, finishing ahead of the Alienware M11x r3 (5:23) but the Lenovo Y480 came out on top (3:20).

The Monster 1.0 uses Nvidia's Optimus auto-switching technology to toggle between the integrated Intel HD 4000 GPU and the more powerful Nvidia GeForce GT 650M discrete graphics controller. With the Nvidia GT 650M, the Monster 1.0 delivered impressive frame rates on our gaming tests. Its 3DMark 11 Extreme score of 726 couldn't match the MSI GT783 (1,056), which uses a more powerful GTX 580M GPU, but its Crysis DX10 scores were only off by a few frames per second. The Monster 1.0 managed 85.7 frames per second (fps) on the medium quality (1024 x 768) test and a very playable 39.3 fps on the high quality (native) test. The GT783 scored 97.3 and 41.3, respectively. The Monster 1.0 beat the Alienware M11x r3's Crysis score medium quality by 30 fps and the Lenovo Y480's score by 17.3 fps.

On our Lost Planet 2 DX9 gaming test the Monster 1.0 gave us frame rates of 64.1fps (at medium quality) and 33.7 fps (at high quality), beating the Alienware M11x r3 (which scored 39.9 fps and 20.6 fps, respectively) and the Lenovo Y480 (49.9 fps and 24.1fps) handily. Not surprisingly, the MSI GT783 took top honors with scores of 132.8 fps (medium) and 44.1 fps (high).

The Monster 1.0's 6-cell 62Wh battery gave us just 3 hours 30 minutes of juice on the MobileMark 2007 battery test, which is relatively short for an 11-inch laptop. In fact, that's almost identical to the MSI GT783, which has a 17.3 inch, 1,920-by-1,080 screen. The Lenovo Y480 (4:48) lasted an hour and 18 minutes longer than the Monster 1.0, but none of them could touch the Alienware M11x r3's time of 8:03.

Lithium ion batteries generate electricity by shuttling lithium ions through an electrolyte. In a fully charged battery, lithium ions are stored in a cathode, such as lithium cobalt oxide (LiCoO₂). When in use, lithium ions flow from the cathode through an electrolyte into the anode, most commonly made of carbon. During recharging, the ions are pushed back to the cathode where they started.

In situ transmission electron microscopy at EMSL was used to study structural changes in the team?s new anode system. Real-time measurements show silicon nanoparticles inside carbon shells before (left) and after (right) lithiation.
Researchers built upon current technology by making a new type of anode that consists of single silicon nanoparticles inside carbon shells, much like yolks inside eggs. In this new design, lithium ions flow from the cathode through the electrolyte, diffuse through the carbon shells, and enter the silicon?which can hold ten times as many lithium ions as carbon alone. By leaving just the right amount of space, the lithiated silicon nanoparticles swell to fill, but not burst, the carbon shell.
The result? A lithium ion battery system that compared to commercial batteries holds seven times more energy and can be discharged and recharged five times as many times before it wears out. Critical to its good performance, the new system forms a stable crust, a solid electrolyte interphase, on the anode that is a consequence of electrolyte decomposition. Moreover, the team?s manufacturing process is affordable, efficient, and can be readily scaled up.

Plainfield Central defensive tackle Bryce Douglas is following in his father's footsteps. On Friday, the incoming high school senior accepted an offer to spend his college years in Champaign playing for the Illinois Fighting Illini.

Douglas is 6-foot-2, 315 lbs. He also had an offer from Central Michigan and received interest from Boston College, Northwestern and Purdue.

Douglas' father Bruce is former Illinois basketball player. The defensive tackle was in Champaign for a lineman camp. He received an offer after the camp and immediately accepted.

Illinois currently has the 21st best recruiting class in the country according the Rivals. Douglas sounds like a kid who wanted to be in Champaign all along.

"I've been around Illinois for as long as I can remember," Bryce Douglas said. "I spent so much time at games and at different events at Illinois it just feels like home to me. Illinois was the one offer I was really hoping for, and to get that offer just blows me away. Both of my parents went to Illinois, and now I can follow in my parents' footsteps at Illinois."

Turkey: Syria's downing of fighter jet can't be ignored

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said on Saturday it was not possible to ignore the fact that Syria had shot down a Turkish fighter jet and said everything that needed to be done following the incident would be done, Turkish media reported.?

Gul said it was routine for jets travelling at high speed to cross borders for a short distance. He said an investigation into the incident would look at whether the plane was downed in Turkish airspace, media reported.?

Reports are surfacing that Syria may have shot down a Turkish fighter jet over Syrian waters in the Mediterranean Sea. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

Gul also said Ankara had been in telephone contact with Damascus and that a search operation for the plane and missing pilots was still under way.?

"It is not possible to cover over a thing like this, whatever is necessary will be done," Gul was quoted as saying by state news agency Anatolia.

Bringing down the cost of microbial fuel cells

ScienceDaily (June 23, 2012) ? Engineers at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) have identified a catalyst that provides the same level of efficiency in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) as the currently used platinum catalyst, but at 5% of the cost.

Since more than 60% of the investment in making microbial fuel cells is the cost of platinum, the discovery may lead to much more affordable energy conversion and storage devices.

The material -- nitrogen-enriched iron-carbon nanorods -- also has the potential to replace the platinum catalyst used in hydrogen-producing microbial electrolysis cells (MECs), which use organic matter to generate a possible alternative to fossil fuels.

"Fuel cells are capable of directly converting fuel into electricity," says UWM Professor Junhong Chen, who created the nanorods and is testing them with Assistant Professor Zhen (Jason) He. "With fuel cells, electrical power from renewable energy sources can be delivered where and when required, cleanly, efficiently and sustainably."

The scientists also found that the nanorod catalyst outperformed a graphene-based alternative being developed elsewhere. In fact, the pair tested the material against two other contenders to replace platinum and found the nanorods' performance consistently superior over a six-month period.

The nanorods have been proved stable and are scalable, says Chen, but more investigation is needed to determine how easily they can be mass-produced. More study is also required to determine the exact interaction responsible for the nanorods' performance.

The work was published in March in the journal Advanced Materials.

The right recipe

MFCs generate electricity while removing organic contaminants from wastewater. On the anode electrode of an MFC, colonies of bacteria feed on organic matter, releasing electrons that create a current as they break down the waste.

On the cathode side, the most important reaction in MFCs is the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Platinum speeds this slow reaction, increasing efficiency of the cell, but it is expensive.

Microbial electrolysis cells (MECs) are related to MFCs. However, instead of electricity, MECs produce hydrogen. In addition to harnessing microorganisms at the anode, MECS also use decomposition of organic matter and platinum in a catalytic process at their cathodes.

Chen and He's nanorods incorporate the best characteristics of other reactive materials, with nitrogen attached to the surface of the carbon rod and a core of iron carbide. Nitrogen's effectiveness at improving the carbon catalyst is already well known. Iron carbide, also known for its catalytic capabilities, interacts with the carbon on the rod surface, providing "communication" with the core. Also, the material's unique structure is optimal for electron transport, which is necessary for ORR.

When the nanorods were tested for potential use in MECs, the material did a better job than the graphene-based catalyst material, but it was still not as efficient as platinum.

"But it shows that there could be more diverse applications for this material, compared to graphene," says He. "And it gave us clues for why the nanorods performed differently in MECs."

Research with MECs was published in June in the journal Nano Energy.

No more "Arggh! Copy, delete, paste, edit, post." Facebook is now rolling out the ability to edit comments, but users will be able to see the full edit history of a thread. This is just one more feature that I really liked about Google+, since I could essentially live blog with it and fix my mistakes, but that Facebook has now too. Facebook tells me comment editing is rolling out now and will become available to everyone in the next few days on the web. There's no comment editing from mobile yet where that damn auto-correct lurks , though, and you still can't edit original posts which would be much more helpful. So if you have to say or spell something wrong, do it from your desktop on someone else's post.

Challenge to China on rare earths

Vietnam and Japan have opened a centre for research into rare earth minerals to challenge China's monopoly of supply.

The elements are crucial for many modern technologies including computers, TVs and wind turbines.

China produces more than 90% of the world's rare earths but has enforced strict export restrictions.

Vietnam, with huge untapped reserves is one of a number of countries gearing up to take advantage of worldwide demand.

One of the countries worst affected by the curtailment of Chinese rare earth exports is Japan. They import around 60% of China's production primarily for use in the electronics and automobile industries.

Tokyo is so concerned about the country's reliance on China in this field that they have been keen to develop alternatives. In 2010 Japan and Vietnam signed an agreement to co-operate in the exploitation of the minerals. Vietnam is reckoned to be in the top ten in the world in terms of rare earth reserves.

Now the two have opened a jointly financed technology centre to help to process and separate the ore with the rare elements then shipped to Japan.

Tim Worstall is a senior fellow at the Adam Smith Institute and an expert in rare earth minerals.

"What's happening with Vietnam and Japan is not in itself a decisive change but it is a symptom of other things going on in the market which are changing the supply from China to non-Chinese sources."

In March this year, Japan along with the European Union and the US submitted an official complaint to the World Trade Organisation about China's export restrictions. China says that it's curtailed supplies because extracting rare elements from ore is very damaging to the environment.

But according to Tim Worstall, there is another important aspect to China's move that in some ways explains the Japanese interest in forming an alliance with Vietnam.

"What China is said to be doing is reducing the exports so that the people who add the value and produce the expensive pieces of equipment move their production into China, that's something that some people are not happy to do," he explained.

"That's really the background to the Japanese and Vietnamese tie up, yes it gives them an alternative source from China but also gives them a source that's happy to ship them the raw materials rather than ask them to move into their country."

Rare no longer

And in Vietnam there are now projects underway in several countries to improve the exploitation of rare elements that are still crucial for the manufacture of batteries, magnets, mobile phones and other devices.

"There's no shortage of rare earth ore at all and there won't be for several centuries at minimum," Tim Worstall told BBC News.

"There is a shortage of the processing capacity to turn those ores into the individual rare elements but that is also being addressed.

Several commentators expect that in the next few years, the current shortage of the elements will become a glut. Tim Worstall says that the situation is about to change dramatically.

"I can think of three specific projects that I know that are financed and in the next two to three years will supply about 40% of the world market. I think the whole question becomes irrelevant as we get more non-Chinese supplies."

That Nokia would be joining Microsoft on this day of Windows Phone 8 revelations is no surprise -- the companies long ago inked their blood pact on the back of Mango. Now, at today's summit in San Francisco, Espoo's Kevin Shields just announced a slew of new and updated apps to currently available Lumia handsets starting next week. Spreading the love to Mango and above, existing users will be treated to a new DLNA app dubbed PlayTo that allows for video, music and photo sharing wirelessly, Nokia Counter to monitor and manage data usage, My Commute which utilizes Drive to compute travel time and arrange routing and a 3.0 update to Nokia Music.

And, given that this is the company behind PureView, current Lumia devices running Windows Phone will receive an imaging facelift of sorts, augmenting the baked-in optics via Camera Extras. This suite of apps will effectively upgrade the core photo-taking experience with the addition of a self-timer, action shots, panorama and a Smart Group Shot setting (likely built upon Scalado software). So, while your eagerness to adopt that cyan Lumia 900 may not pay off with an upgrade to WP 8, at the very least Nokia is adopting a policy of no Lumia user left (that far) behind.
