BEIJING ? The strain of H5H1 bird flu that killed a Chinese man cannot spread among people, a health agency said Monday, appealing for calm after the country's first reported case of the disease in humans in 18 months.
Genetic analysis indicated the virus spread directly from poultry to the victim, who died Saturday in the southern city of Shenzhen, the Shenzhen Disease Control Center said in a statement reported by the official Xinhua News Agency.
"Though it is highly pathogenic to human beings, the virus can not spread among people," the statement said, according to Xinhua. "There is no need for Shenzhen citizens to panic."
H5N1 rarely infects humans and usually only those who come into close contact with diseased poultry. Scientists are closely watching the virus for any signs it is becoming more easily transmissible from human to human.
A 39-year-old bus driver surnamed Chen developed a fever Dec. 21 and was hospitalized Dec. 25, according to an earlier statement by city and provincial authorities. The provincial health department said Health Ministry experts confirmed Saturday that he was infected with H5N1.
Xinhua said health authorities still were trying to figure out where he was infected.
The Guangdong health department has said 120 people who had close contact with Chen have not developed any abnormal symptoms.
The World Health Organization says globally 336 people have died from 573 confirmed bird flu cases since 2003. Of these, 40 cases were in China, 26 of which were fatal.
Chen's death was a week after two dead birds tested positive for the virus in Hong Kong, which is just across a river from Shenzhen.
More than 19,000 birds at a Hong Kong market were slaughtered and imports and sales of live poultry were banned for three weeks after a chicken carcass tested positive for H5N1. Lab tests later confirmed that an Oriental magpie robin found dead on Dec. 17 was also infected.
China's last reported human case of H5N1 was in June 2010. A pregnant 22-year-old woman from central Hubei province died after being exposed to sick and dead poultry.

The airman completed
an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness,and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is a 2009 graduate of York County School of Technology.
In mid-December, a NASA satellite snapped an image of the disintegration of a large iceberg that first broke away from Antarctica nearly 12 years ago, and has been wandering the Southern Ocean ever since.
It's not unusual for icebergs to survive for up to a quarter century if they stay near their birthplace, in the frigid waters surrounding Antarctica; yet if they stray too far north, the massive chunks of ice can quickly disappear, said Ted Scambos, a glaciologist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, Boulder.
In March 2000, the largest iceberg ever measured broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf, a massive plain of floating ice that clings to the coastline of Antarctica. The iceberg , dubbed B-15, was a whopping 170 miles (270 kilometers) long and 25 miles (40 km) wide? ?? nearly the size of Connecticut. Over time, the iceberg broke into smaller pieces.
One of those pieces, known as B-15J, was spotted about 1,700 miles (2,700 km) southeast of New Zealand on Dec. 19.
At the beginning of November, B-15J was roughly 12 miles (20 km) across, but has now crumbled to just a few miles breadth as it sails through warmer waters, Scambos told OurAmazingPlanet.
How icebergs are born
Icebergs are birthed by ice shelves, which are the outlets of glaciers and regularly send enormous icebergs floating out to sea in a natural process known as calving.
NASA researchers recently spotted a huge rift in Western Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier ice shelf, and they expect the shelf to calve in the coming months.
Although calving is a natural process, some Antarctic ice shelves?are undergoing rapid, sometimes catastrophic change, and Scambos said that tracking icebergs as they melt is a good proxy for scientists trying to understand what is happening to ice shelves in general in a warming world.
Ice shelves essentially act as doorstops for glaciers. When ice shelves disappear or weaken, glaciers speed up, dumping ever more ice into the ocean and raising global sea levels.
Scambos said B-15J is rapidly disintegrating. "It's similar to what happens to ice shelves when they go through a rapid warming," he said.
Smaller and smaller pieces
"Icebergs do a sort of fast-forward through climate change as they drift northward," Scambos said. "All the things that go on in terms of melting on the underside and melting on the surface, they all happen at high speed and dramatically with these large, tabular bergs." Scambos said researchers are trying to get some high-resolution satellite images of B-15J as it melts away, but it's difficult. The iceberg moves between 10 and 15 miles (16 and 24 kilometers) a day, and it's a challenged to aim the right satellite required for such detailed images ? one operated by Taiwan ? at such a small target.
The major pieces of iceberg B-15 have run through most of the alphabet, Scambos said. "It goes to at least B-15X, but the letter pieces are starting to break off into more pieces ? and below 10 kilometers [6 mi] nobody tracks them, so there are literally thousands of pieces of B-15 floating around," he said.

Laughing babies, talking dogs and Rebecca Black may be Internet sensations, but if you want to add something more substantive?to your viral video diet, turn your dial to dueling chatbots, dancing Ph.D. theses and other highlights from the past year's surfeit of science videos.
Talking bots can be just as surprising and silly as talking dogs. Take "AI vs. AI," for example. Cornell researchers Igor Labutov, Jason Losinski and Hod Lipson took two Cleverbot artificial-intelligence programs, hooked them up to each other, and typed in "Hi" as an ice-breaker. Hilarity ensues.
"We just assembled the pieces, the audio and the avatars, and let the program run," Lipson, an associate professor at the Cornell Creative Machines Lab, told me today.
The funniest line in the video comes when one AI program tells the other that they're chatting together as robots. The other bot replies, "I am not a robot, I am a unicorn." Where did that come from?
"The conversations are based on millions of conversations that it had before," Lipson said. "Probably this term is something it had encountered in some conversation with a human." The best guess is that someone made a reference to the unicorn from Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass," and somehow that stuck in the Cleverbot's electronic brain.
The takeaway is that artificially intelligent chatbots can become as?petulant and irrational as the?humans who made them. This Cleverbot conversation provides further evidence of that. ("I'm talking about you ... how you are a creep," one clone-bot tells another.)
