The latest Internet marketing techniques & SEO tips using Google ...

Google analytics Real-Time has opened up a host of new SEO tricks and Internet marketing techniques to help businesses and marketers create more flexible and responsive SEO, content, ads, and marketing campaigns.

This article explores the analytical features of Real-Time and then provides a list of exciting new marketing and SEO tips & tricks to help you get the most out of your web content, ad campaigns and social media marketing.

Features of Google analytics' Real-Time

To access Real-Time in Google analytics, click Home from the main menu and then select Real-Time >> Overview from the navigation menu on the left hand side of the page.

Real-Time Overview

The overview page provides the following data:

  • Number of current, active visitors
  • Pageview history for the last 30 minutes
  • Per second history of the current minute's pageviews
  • Top referrals
  • Top active pages
  • Top keywords
  • Top locations

Each of the remaining pages in Real-Time (Locations, traffic sources, Content) provide a focused view of their respective data niches, and allow you to add filters to your real time data.

For example, go to the Locations page and click on a country from the map. Now head back to the Overview page and look at the data filtered by the country you specified. Neat, huh?

You can easily remove any filters by clicking on the blue filter link at the top of the page.

Internet marketing techniques and SEO tip using Real-Time

Real time analytical data about blog or website traffic is incredibly valuable for any Internet marketer, advertiser, SEM, SEO, blogger or online business.

By closely watching traffic patterns, content hits, visitor data, and referrals it is possible to build up a picture of how marketing, advertising or content spreads through the Internet, how long it takes to have an impact, how much of an impact it has, whether or not it is having the right impact, and so on.

  • Twitter marketing: Measure the immediate impact of a tweet. Repeat this process at different times to build up a picture of the type of tweets that drive more traffic, and when it's best to share.
  • Real-time responsive advertising: If you an see that traffic is particularly high in one location, in one demographic, at the current moment, why not change your advertising to match them? In the mornings most of my traffic is from India, but by afternoon, most of my visitors are from the U.S. Completely different demographics.
  • Real-time responsive social media engagement: tonnes of traffic coming from a LinkedIn group? Why not head over there and join the conversation. Help stimulate real time debate and drive more traffic and visibility for your site, blog or brand.
  • General social media sharing: Digg an article and watch for spikes in traffic. Share a blog post on Facebook and analyze the resulting traffic. Share articles and news on Reddit, StumbleUpon, or LinkedIn to find out which times have higher engagement levels, etc.
  • Google ads analysis: Just released a new Google ad? Keep an eye on real time data coming through to see how visitors are responding (i.e. are they bouncing, browsing aimlessly, or converting?)
  • PPC campaign analysis: Launch a new ad campaign by making sure everything is working properly. Check your real-time analytics to ensure PPC ads are driving traffic to the right place. Quickly respond to problems or high bounce rates.
  • New content: Published a new article? Keep an eye on Real-Time to see how long it takes for the article to get picked up, shared and start driving traffic. Find out which visitors are "early adopters" and regularly share new content from your site. Understand your content's early stage sharing patterns so that you can improve on it.
  • Error correcting: Whatever SEO or Internet marketing activity you have recently performed, it is vital that any problems are detected and corrected as early as possible. Monitor Real-Time to check for spike in 404 codes, etc.
  • Server load monitoring: If you can see a huge traffic spike, or very high server loads, you can take steps to prevent your server from crashing. Perhaps throttle back on computationally expensive modules, or put implement other safeguards to prevent downtime.
  • Improved online responsiveness: Has someone mentioned you in a blog or news article. Take note of traffic spikes immediately and go contribute and "shape" the course of the debate to enhance your brand and increase traffic and conversions.

Do you use Real-Time analytics data? What have you found it most useful for - apart from staring at the hypnotic progress of visits and pageviews with time? Share your SEO tips and Internet marketing techniques with us in the comments, or join the discussion on Twitter or LinkedIn.

Computer Security

In Today?s Society, Protecting Your Computer Is A Requirement

Advances in computer technology is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it affords us quick and easy access to numerous conveniences such as bank statements, favorite shopping centers, school and health records, and more. On the other hand, it can also grant the same access to those who aren?t supposed to get it. Although it?s a rare occurrence, hacking has become the biggest criminal nuisance in computer history.

Make no bones about it. There?s nothing innocent or cute about the hacker. Today?s hackers aren?t the pimply-faced teen rebels that you might be thinking of. Instead, this generation of hackers are grown individuals who are more than likely earning a living by stealing the identities of innocent, law abiding individuals and then selling those identities to others who want to slip by the system. And the only protection against these seedy people is prevention.

Computer security couldn?t be more important than it is today and that?s why we?ve taken the time to introduce it to you. You can reduce the probability of experiencing identity theft by making your computer as hacker-proof as possible. All that?s needed is a little software and a lot of common sense.

1. Install an anti-virus/anti-spyware program. Anti-virus/anti-spyware software will stop malicious code from downloading and installing onto your computer while you peruse the Internet. Known as viruses, worms, or spyware, this malicious code can destroy important files and render your computer good for only one thing: sending sensitive data back to the server of an identity thief.

2. Don?t store sensitive data on your computer in the first place. Should your computer get infected with a virus, worm, or piece of spyware, you can thwart the individuals responsible by not storing your personal information on your PC so that when and if your computer does send back data ? it won?t be anything valuable. Hackers look for things like full names, social security numbers, phone numbers, home addresses, work-related information, and credit card numbers. If these things aren?t saved onto a computer, there?s nothing critical to worry about other than restoring your computer to a non-virus condition.

3. Don?t open files without scanning them with an anti-virus/anti-spyware program. In the past, the warning was to avoid opening files from people that you don?t know. Today it?s really not safe to open files from anyone (without scanning the files) because that?s how viruses get spread ? through files ? even by mistake. So even though your co-worker may have emailed a funny video, it?s no more safe to open than a video downloaded from a complete stranger. Be safe and scan each and every file you download from the Internet or receive through email regardless of where it came from.

4. Create a barrier between your computer and prying eyes. Anti-virus/anti-spyware programs are only effective after the effect. But you can prevent identity theft from occurring by installing a firewall. A firewall is software that checks all data entering and exiting a computer and it then blocks that which doesn?t meet specified security criteria (user-defined rules).1

5. Don?t click on website links in spam messages. In an effort to obtain personal information, some spammers will send email that asks you to click on a link. The email messages are often disguised as important messages from well-known online establishments, and they often try to scare their readers into clicking links with threats of closing an account of some sort. Sometimes the links are harmless and attempt to con the reader into volunteering personal information (credit card number), but other times the links attempt to download harmful software onto a computer.

Your best protection against computer crimes is your own knowledge. Hopefully the suggestions above will prompt you into taking appropriate action and into protecting your computer with the suggested tools. In doing so, you?ll not only protect yourself, you?ll prevent the spread of these malicious activities and protect others at the same time.

Johnson cruises to 3rd win in NASCAR All-Star race

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) ? It's not often a race car driver intentionally cruises slowly at the back of the field.

Jimmie Johnson did it for roughly 60 laps Saturday night, and it earned him a cool $1 million payday.

Johnson used a calculated strategy ? he drove hard for the first and last segments, and coasted for the three in between ? to join Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon as the only three-time winners of NASCAR's All-Star race.

The five-time champion won the first 20-lap segment of the Sprint All-Star race, then deliberately faded to the back for the next three 20-lap segments at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His plan was to keep the No. 48 Chevrolet out of trouble, then make his play for the win in the fifth and final segment.

"We did a strategy that we thought was best for our team," he said.

It certainly was, even if it was the antithesis of what race car drivers do for a living.

But it worked for this year's new format, which guaranteed the winners of the first four segments would be the first four drivers down pit road for a mandatory stop before the 10-lap sprint to the finish. Johnson's win in the first segment meant he was guaranteed to be the first driver down pit road, and he had the first stall ? the reward for his Hendrick Motorsports team winning Thursday night's Pit Crew Competition.

His race, after winning that first segment, was simply to beat everyone else off pit road. Johnson raced Matt Kenseth down the lane, and edged him across the line.

He then needed a clean and quick restart, which he executed to perfection, to pull away for the win. This win comes a week after his Darlington Raceway victory gave Hendrick Motorsports its 200th Cup win.

"Man, I don't want this week to end," Johnson said.

He celebrated by picking up team owner Rick Hendrick, who climbed halfway through the window of the Chevrolet for Johnson's celebratory lap. It was Hendrick's seventh All-Star race win.

"He said come pick me up, and once I got to him, he didn't want the ride," Johnson said. "I'm like, 'No, no, I came to get you, Get on the car.' It was great to take him around."

It didn't look very comfortable ? or safe.

"That was the dumbest thing I've ever done in racing," Hendrick said. "I thought I was going to be a busted watermelon."

Brad Keselowski, winner of the third segment, had no chance to catch Johnson over the closing 10 laps. The final segment was the shortest by 10 laps, but Keselowski didn't think it mattered.

"I don't think it was going to make a difference if it was a hundred laps at the end; Jimmie was just that fast," Keselowski said. "You can't really steal any of his thunder on that. I was doing all I could to get by, but wasn't meant to be."

But Keselowski, who won the third segment, wasn't all that disappointed.

"It's all about the restart," Keselowski said. "The high line on the restart just wouldn't go. I don't know if I would have been able to do anything, but I would have liked another shot. We got beat by a five-time champ and two-time All-Star winner, so I think we're doing pretty good. We didn't have enough to pull it off."

Kenseth, winner of the second segment, finished third. He had some tense moments after teammates Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle had engine failures ? Biffle's exploded into a giant fireball ? and initially wasn't all that comfortable following Johnson's lead of running around the back until the final 10 laps.

"I watched what the 48 did. They won the first one, so they didn't race until the last 10," Kenseth said. "They seem to know what they're doing, pretty smart. We watched that, kind of hung back. There wasn't any reward for racing up through there. You knew you were coming on pit road second."

And after losing the race off pit road to Johnson, and the restart, too, Kenseth knew he couldn't catch the winner. It was Kenseth's fifth top-five finish in 12 All-Star races.

"For me, you got somebody as fast as him out front, there was no way I was going to have a shot in 10 laps," Kenseth said. "Ten laps is kind of short, but yet the fastest car was out front. It was hard to beat that."

Kyle Busch finished fourth and was followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who won the fourth segment and advanced into the All-Star race by winning the qualifying race earlier Saturday night. Busch, the pole-sitter, wasn't surprised by the finishing order.

"It was exactly like everybody thought it would be; Anybody who wins the first segment will win the race," Busch said.

CNN's health blog: straights can learn from gays | Attack Machine

Males are wired to sow their seeds wherever, whenever with whomever.

For heterosexual men, the hitch is that females are not wired that way ? they say no.

But put gay men together, with no one to say no, and you have rampant promiscuity. Which accounts for some bad pubic health outcomes, most notably AIDS and other STDs.

So why does an eminent marriage therapist think straights can learn from gays?

Nagoski pointed me to a 12-year study of same-sex couples by eminent marriage therapist Dr. John Gottman, which concluded that all couple types ? straight or gay ? have many of the same issues and the same paths to staying happy together.

But Gottman?s research also indicated that gay/lesbian couples are more upbeat in the face of conflict and, compared to straight couples, use more affection and humor when they bring up a disagreement.

?When it comes to emotions, we think these couples may operate with very different principles than straight couples,? says Gottman. ?Straight couples may have a lot to learn from gay and lesbian relationships.?

Notice how lesbians here are lumped in with gay males, when they are very different.

Studies suggest, for instance, that gay male couples tend to have sex more often than any other type of couples, while lesbian couples tend to have the least amount of sex. Since women often value emotional intimacy over sexual intimacy, low sex drive may not be a concern.

Likewise, two men who have strong libidos may be able to accommodate their sexual desires within an open relationship.

?A number of my gay clients prefer to be sexually open but emotionally monogamous,? says sex and relationship therapist Joe Kort. ?They can have lovers on the side and not have it be a threat to the relationship.?

And marriages with children? Does anyone believe that such behavior will lead to emotionally healthy kids?

Details, details.

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.
