Moreover, most users of the services say they had a positive experience and believe the dating sites actually helped them find a better match. But is this true?
Compatibility at your fingertips
Do online dating sites really help in finding a better match?
Dr. Neil Clark Warren, founder of eHarmony.com thinks so. Having researched relationships for more than 35 years, he made it his goal to reduce the divorce rate in America to less than 10% from its current standing of 50%. Unlike any other dating site, eHarmony.com is the only one that does not allow you to search an open database for potential lovers. Instead, users are matched based on the results of a personality profile and ?dimensions of compatibility.?
Matching by personality is a highly effective way of getting people to have positive experiences at the beginning of a relationship. Theories of attraction tell us that we pay attention to those who are similar to us both in personality and attitudes. We tend to like those who agree with us and dislike those who do not.
But what enhances marriage?and avoids divorce?over the long run? Will dimensions of compatibility help people find great love and prevent heartache?
The good news is that research is looking into these important questions. The 2005 eHarmony Study of Marriage in America found that ?eHarmony couples have significantly happier and more successful marriages than couples who met in any other ways.?? eHarmony couples also reported their marriages to be ?extremely happy? to ?perfect? notably more than non-eHarmony couples (77% versus 55%).
The bad news is that the research is limited. For the sake of comparison, the previously mentioned study offered no data on the failure rates of those who met on the site.
Beyond the research, a bigger issue exists: The popularity of online dating websites is only about 10 years old at best. What about long-term stability? Will the similarities couples have today hold them together tomorrow? Is compatibility really predictive of long-term marital satisfaction? Only time will tell.
Great love in good times and bad
John Gottman, one of the most prominent researchers in the world on marriage, notes that ?similarity is at best, a weak predictor of marital outcomes ? because [it] does not tell us anything about process ? It does not tap the processes that matter in maintaining, or destroying, a marriage.?
And besides, similarity is all about perception. Studies show that happy marriages are not predicted by personality traits, per se. Instead, it is the perceived similarity between partners that is associated with marital happiness.
It makes sense that while a relationship is strong, partners tend to perceive themselves as very similar. However, if conflict builds in the relationship, perceived personality similarities decrease and so does martial satisfaction! It is only when a marriage is not going well that partners perceive problems in the other?s personality.
So what does predict marital stability and satisfaction? Accepting influence from your spouse. Influence pertains to sharing power in all areas of life, including finances, raising the kids, housework, etc. If you are unable to accept influence from your spouse, it doesn?t matter how compatible or similar you are.
For the eHarmony couple now living out that great marriage, please be wary of assuming that compatibility alone will carry you through the troubled times inevitable in any marital relationship. If you?re looking for great love, remember: Look for someone you respect.

Scientists may have found Higgs boson. What next?
Physicists working at CERN's Large Hadron Collider say it's possible they've discovered the long-sought 'God particle'.? The Higgs boson could lead to 'new physics', they add.

The results, presented Wednesday, are preliminary. Still, the data the teams presented drew thunderous applause and a standing ovation from physicists packed into a lecture hall at the European Organization for Nuclear Research in Geneva, where the results were presented.
In December, the same teams unveiled results that hinted they'd found a particle. But this time each team, using independent ways of hunting for Higgs bosons, found their results matched for a few key measurements, each set carrying literally a 1 in a million chance of being wrong.
"As a layman, I'd say we have it," said CERN Director-General Rolf Heuer. As a scientist, however, he added that researchers now have to figure out what "it" is.
The particle's mass, for instance, falls within the range predicted for a Higgs boson that would fit into the so-called standard model ? a description physicists have painstakingly built of the fundamental particles that make up matter and the forces that govern their interactions.
But some theories predict more than one Higgs boson. And it's possible an unpredicted Higgs wannabe could display some of the predicted properties, a discovery that would drive theorists back to their white boards.
"One of the most exciting aspects of this observation is that the road remains open for a vast range of 'look-alike' alternatives, where any deviation from the Standard Model would point the way to the existence of other new particles or forces of nature," said Harvey Newman, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology in a prepared statement.
However, key pieces of information that would help distinguish among the possibilities are either missing or incomplete, the researchers acknowledge.
Whatever the outcome, it's clear that the researchers involved and the theorists who predicted the existence of the Higgs bosons in the mid-1960s have entered Nobel Prize territory, to say nothing of new frontiers for exploring the nature of the universe.
"We're reaching into the fabric of the universe at a level we've never [reached] before," says Joe Icandela, a physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara and the spokesman for one of the two major experiments hunting for the Higgs boson at CERN. "This is not like other ordinary particles. It's a key to the structure of the universe."
If the discovery the teams announced turn out to be the standard-model Higgs, it means "we've completed one part of the story, and we're on the frontier now."
Call it the energy frontier ? in this case, energies that approximate levels thought to have existed in the first millionths of a millionth of a second after the big bang, which gave birth to the universe some 13.6 billion years ago.
The teams conducted their experiments using the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, an underground particle accelerator nearly 17 miles in circumference. This demolition-derby track for subatomic particles straddles the French-Swiss border outside of Geneva. It's designed to collide protons with energies comparable to those that existed in the infant universe.
At those energy levels, a standard-model Higgs boson would have existed on its own. But as the universe cooled, the Higgs bosons present at the time would have grown unstable and decayed.

Privacy issues: Data abuse on certain mobile apps uncovered
ScienceDaily (July 5, 2012) ? "My smartphone knows everything about me, starting with my name, my phone number, my e-mail address, my interests, up to my current location," explains computer science professor Michael Backes, who manages the Center for IT-Security, Privacy and Accountability at Saarland University. "It even knows my friends quite well, as it saves their contact details, too," says Backes. Therefore he is not surprised that several mobile applications, also known as apps, display simple functionality up front, while in the background, they send the identification number of the device, the personal whereabouts of the user, or even the contact details of friends, colleagues and customers to a server somewhere in the internet.
The producers of anti-virus software have been making vivid predictions of such scenarios for some time now; in the meantime, scientific studies also prove the threat. A study from the University of California in Santa Barbara (US) concluded that among 825 examined apps for the iPhone and its operating system iOS, 21 percent forward the ID number, four percent the current position, and 0.5 percent even copy the address book.
Michael Backes and his team of researchers now bring this abuse to an end. Their approach focuses on Android. It is the most common operating system for smartphones and tablet computers. Developed by the Google software group, this freely available operating system is used by several mobile phone manufacturers, and since November 2011 is activated daily on more than 700,000 devices.
However, Android is known for its rigorous policy on assignment of privileges. If a user wants to install a downloaded app, he learns via a list which access rights to data (location, contacts, photos) and functions (Internet, locating) will be claimed by that app. Now he has two options: Either he accepts all conditions, or the app will not be installed. After the installation, the privileges cannot be revoked. "Moreover, many developers generally claim all rights for their app because the concept of privileges of Android is misleading, but they want to ensure the smooth functioning of their app nevertheless," explains Philipp von Styp-Rekowsky, PhD student at the chair in IT security and cryptography.
This "sink-or-swim" strategy is put to rest by the researcher from Saarbr?cken. The app "SRT AppGuard" based on their approach determines, for every application installed on a smartphone, what it accesses, and shows this information to the user. Privileges can now be revoked or granted to the respective app at any time. The researchers have already published the app on the platform "Google Play." It can be downloaded there for free. It runs problem-free on Android 3.x.x and higher. The development of the app has been taken on by the enterprise Backes SRT, which was founded by Backes in 2010. It is also located on the campus in Saarbr?cken.
