General Electric has informed the state it intends to cut 70 jobs at its PrimeStar Solar operation in Arvada, according to Westword, which broke the story Thursday.
The company filed a notice with the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment?
that the jobs will be eliminated on Aug. 31 and said the job losses would be permanent. "This is a reduction in force and is not an elimination of the entire facility," GE told the state.GE (NYSE: GE) earlier this year purchased PrimeStar Solar, which makes thin-film solar panels.
The company in April announced it chose Colorado as the site of a $300 million solar-panel manufacturing plant that would eventually employ 355 people. GE would build the plant in Aurora by the end of next year.
But GE last month said it's put plans for the plant on hold for as long as 18 months while it reevaluates its solar-power strategy.
Cathy Proctor reports in the latest print edition that GE and other companies are scaling back efforts in Colorado, which raises questions about the future of the state's renewable-energy industry.
