One dead in Phoenix office shooting

PHOENIX (AP) ? A gunman opened fire at a Phoenix office complex on Wednesday, killing one person, wounding two others and setting off a manhunt. Police warned the public that he was "armed and dangerous."

Authorities identified the suspect as Arthur D. Harmon, who they said opened fire at the end of a mediation session. They identified a man who died hours after the late morning shooting as 48-year-old Steve Singer.

Police said a 43-year-old man was listed in critical condition and a 32-year-old woman suffered non-life threatening injuries.

"We believe the two men were the targets. It was not a random shooting," said Sgt. Tommy Thompson, a Phoenix police spokesman.

Thompson said authorities believe Harmon acted alone and fled the scene in a car after the 10:30 a.m. shooting.

Harmon allegedly shot at someone who tried to follow him after the shooting in an attempt to get his license plate number, according to authorities.

Police didn't immediately release the names of the wounded. But a Phoenix law firm, Osborn Maledon, said one of its lawyers, Mark Hummels, was among the wounded. The firm said he "was representing a client in a mediation" when he was shot.

According to court documents, Harmon was scheduled to go to a law office in the same building where the shooting took place for a settlement conference in a lawsuit he filed last April against Scottsdale-based Fusion Contact Centers LLC, where Singer was the CEO.

The company had hired him to refurbish office cubicles at two call centers in California, but a contract dispute arose.

Fusion said Harmon was paid nearly $30,000 under the $47,000 contract. But the company asked him to repay much of the money when it discovered that the cubicles could not be refurbished, according to the documents.

Harmon argued Fusion hung him out to dry by telling him to remove and store 206 "worthless" work stations after the mix-up was discovered. Harmon said Fusion then told him that the company decided to use a competitor.

Harmon's lawsuit had sought payment for the remainder of the contract, $20,000 in damages and reimbursement for storage fees and legal costs.

Pro tempore Judge Ira Schwartz, who scheduled the meeting, did not immediately return an email seeking comment. A message left Wednesday at the home of Singer also wasn't immediately returned.

Hummels was representing Fusion in the lawsuit.

As police searched for the shooter, SWAT teams and two armored vehicles surrounded a home about 7 miles from the shooting scene. Police served a search warrant to enter the house, which county property records show was sold by Harmon to his son last year for $26,000.

For a time, officers used a megaphone to ask Harmon to surrender, believing he might be inside the home.

The gunfire at the office complex prompted terrified workers to lock the doors to their offices and hide far from the windows. SWAT officers searched the building.

"Everyone was just scared, honestly, just scared," said Navika Sood, assistant director of nursing at First at Home Health Services who along with her co-workers locked the entrances to their office.

Sood said police evacuated the office about 30 minutes after she first heard the popping noises.

The shooting took place on the same day that hearings on legislation to address gun violence were convened in Washington, with former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords testifying for stricter gun controls.

A gunman shot Giffords in the head during a shooting rampage in Tucson in January 2011.

Around 10:30 a.m., the gunman arrived at the office building and got into a dispute with someone, a conflict that escalated to the point where he drew a gun and shot three people, Thompson said.

Vanessa Brogan, who works in sales support at an insurance business in the three-story complex, said she heard a loud bang that she thought at first was from somebody working in or near the building.

She said others at the business thought they heard multiple loud noises. She said people locked themselves in offices until authorities evacuated the complex that houses insurance, medical and law offices.

Becky Neher, who works for a title company in the building, said the two gunshots she heard sounded like two pieces of metal banging against each other.

Watching from her second-story office, she saw people leaving the building.

"Someone yelled, 'We have a shooter,'" she said. She saw two victims lying on the ground outside the back side of the building. She said health care workers who have offices in the complex came out to help.

Don Jaksa, a software consultant who works in the building, said he was listening to the radio when he suddenly heard "two pops." He said he didn't think they were gunshots.

"My co-worker goes to the range all the time," he said. "He identified it as gunfire."

His co-worker then locked the door. After five minutes, they left and ran into police and someone carrying a stretcher. The police escorted them back to their office and told them to lock the door again.

They were eventually evacuated, and as he sat on a rock outside the complex, his wife called to make sure he was OK after seeing the shooting on the news.

Workers were later allowed to leave the building. Two hugged each other when they got outside.

"You don't expect this when you come to work," worker Lindsa Rincon said.

Card-Linked Offers Platform Edo Opens Up To Local Merchants

edo_logoEdo, the card-linked local offers platform which just closed its $15 million Series C round this past fall, is today introducing a new service for local merchants, which it's calling the "edo Marketplace." The company had previously announced its intention to go after the SMB market at the time of its recent raise, noting that it now?plans to scale through partnerships with merchant acquirers, mobile payment providers, and media publishers. Alongside today's marketplace launch, edo is also making good on those promises to partner by announcing a new agreement with?2Go Media, a Ft. Lauderdale-based company providing marketing tools for merchants and retailers. The agreement will see 2Go Media integrating edo into its iDeals Marketing Platform, which will allow its merchants to target offers to over 100 million consumers.

(AP) ? Microsoft is aiming its redesigned Office software at the growing number of people who expect their favorite applications to be at their fingertips, wherever there's an Internet connection.

In an attempt to extend a lucrative franchise beyond personal computers, the world's biggest software maker is selling a retooled version of Office as an online subscription service to consumers for the first time. It's a departure from Microsoft's traditional approach of granting permission to install Office on solitary machines for a one-time fee.

Tuesday's release comes six months after Microsoft previewed the new-look Office, which includes popular word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.

"This is a fundamental shift in our business that began a several years ago," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer wrote in a blog post.

The revamped Office boasts touch controls, just like the redesigned version of the Windows operating system that Microsoft Corp. released three months ago. The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is trying to ensure that its products retain their appeal at a time when people increasingly rely on mobile devices instead of personal computers.

To tap into that trend, Microsoft is promoting Office 2013 as a program tailored for use over the Internet. All information is automatically stored in Microsoft's data centers, allowing for access to the same material on multiple devices. The content also can be stored on the hard drives of devices.

But Microsoft still isn't trying to get Office on the largest number of devices possible. Office 2013 doesn't include an option that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad or smartphones and tablet computers running the Android software made by Google Inc. That leaves out the majority of smartphones and tablets sold in the past two years.

Microsoft is offering Office 2013 in a $100 annual subscription package, called 365 Home Premium, which includes online access on up to five Windows devices or Apple's Mac computers.

The company believes Office 2013 is currently best suited for Windows devices, said Chris Schneider, Microsoft's senior public relations manager for Office. Microsoft is limiting Office's reach as it tries to grab a bigger piece of the mobile market with its own operating system for smartphones and tablets.

Office will still be sold under a one-time licensing fee that allows the software to be installed on a single machine. Prices for that option start at $140 and range up to $400. People who don't need the entire Office bundle can buy individual programs such as Word, Excel and Outlook for $109 apiece. Microsoft outlines its pricing options in its online store, http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/ .

Office 2013 is the first overhaul of the software suite in three years.

The bundle of programs has become a staple on desktop and laptop computers, providing a rich vein of revenue for Microsoft.

The Microsoft division anchored by Office generates about $24 billion in annual sales, accounting for nearly one-third of the company's total revenue.

Revenue in the Office division fell from the previous year during the three months ending in December, partly because many prospective buyers have been awaiting the latest version.

Microsoft's stock gained 10 cents Tuesday to close at $28.01. The shares are up by less than 1 percent since Microsoft released Windows 8 to great fanfare three months ago. Meanwhile, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed by about 7 percent.

Besides getting access to the suite's programs, 365 Home Premium subscribers receive 20 additional gigabytes of storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive to supplement the 7 gigabytes that the company gives away to accountholders for free. Subscribers also will get 60 minutes of free international calls on Microsoft's Skype service for Internet phone calls and video chats.

College students and teachers will be able to buy Office 2013's online product for $80 for four years, which works out to about $1.67 per month. This option requires proof of student status. A variety of Office subscriptions are also being offered, with monthly fees ranging from $6 to $20 per user. More information can be found at: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/office365/compare-plans.aspx .

The online push reflects Microsoft's recognition that people want access to documents and email on whatever Internet-connected device they might have, wherever they may be, whether it's at work, home or a store while running errands.

"The technology needs to be able to move with you," Schneider said.

It's the first time that Microsoft has tried to persuade consumers that a recurring online subscription is the best way to buy and use Office. Microsoft had previously sold online Office subscriptions primarily to small businesses.

"Over time, the majority of the billion-plus people using Office will be using the Office 365 service," Ballmer predicted in his blog post.

The attempt to sell online Office subscription to consumers comes nearly seven years after Google unveiled its own Internet bundle of word processing, spreadsheet and email programs. Google gives away a basic version of those applications, and charges subscriptions for more sophisticated packages aimed primarily at small businesses.

Microsoft's decision to reshape Office into an online service makes sense, although it may take customers a while to embrace the concept, said Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson. He suspects major companies that rely on Office probably will be among the last users to make the switch.

"This is a good innovation, but the uptake may be slow to begin because it is so different," Olson said.

Do Online Companies Still Need Brochure Marketing? - The Web ...

Brochure MarketingIn this digital age, almost everything is done online. Businesses have discovered how online marketing is reaping them huge benefits. This is due to its accessibility and its ability to reach a wide audience in just an instant. In this new era of marketing though, should you completely forget traditional marketing and just focus on the new technology? Should brochure marketing just be a thing of the past and be shoved into the dustbin of history?

If you think the answer to these two questions is ?Yes,? think again. Brochure marketing is actually still very much essential in marketing businesses, even online companies. Online companies still have to integrate this strategy into their marketing campaign.

These are some of the reasons why:

Credibility

Even with the popularity of the Internet and the emergence of online companies, some consumers are still a bit sceptical about making a huge purchase from unknown online merchants. For these consumers, unless the company is visible in other forms of media they are not to be fully trusted. This is where a brochure will help you. Brochures can act as the company?s visual and tangible representation. By building the company?s visibility you?re also building its credibility.

Face to Face Connection

Nothing beats face to face connection. Handing out a flyer or a brochure to a potential customer and talking to them personally about the product and the company is the best way to market your business. Especially in conventions or other big events where you can set up a booth, brochures can become an essential tool to spark a conversation.

Once the potential client takes home the brochure, it will then be a reminder of that pleasant encounter and the positive effect you were able to give them during your initial meeting. This will be a good start to your business relationship.

Longer Shelf-Life

Online marketing campaigns have a shorter life span compared to that of concrete marketing strategies. According to a study, a Facebook post only had a shelf-life of 18 hours. After that, posts would not have as much of an impact as they initially had since newer posts would come up and push older posts downward.

While Facebook posts can certainly be useful, they cannot last as long as concrete marketing strategies such as brochures. Brochures can certainly last more than 18 hours, especially if the consumer decides to keep one of them at home or at the office. A flier or a brochure of a favourite restaurant that tickled a consumer?s fancy can stay pinned on their kitchen board or refrigerator for months, even years.

Easier Read

With a brochure you can just pick it up and immediately read the content. There?s no need to go anywhere else to get the information you need, or turn on a computer or device to get it.

Brochures also allow the reader to write down notes, encircle an item they?re interested to purchase or point to what they?d like to ask you about.

Availability

Not everyone is online all the time. Even with the advent of Smartphones and mobile browsing, still not everyone is online 24/7. Some people who are online also don?t want to be bothered by advertisements and sales pitches. With this gap in consumers, you can definitely and effectively employ a good brochure.

It?s easy to have company brochures produced. There are many companies nowadays that offer online printing, including good brochure printing services and can give you high quality prints within a short lead time. Why not utilise this opportunity to invest in a good company brochure?

Exploring just one area of marketing will not give you favourable results. Online marketing may be highly useful but if you don?t utilise other strategies, it will not be as effective. More advanced and perhaps better means of marketing may be developed in the future, but one thing?s for sure: a good company brochure will stand the test of time.

So, do online companies still need to do brochure marketing? The answer is a definite, ?Yes.?

Debra Wright blogs about a plethora of topics including digital printing in Business and Education and other fields. Wright considers Digitalpress Pty Ltd as one of the leaders in online printing services.

Poor sleep in old age prevents the brain from storing memories

Jan. 27, 2013 ? The connection between poor sleep, memory loss and brain deterioration as we grow older has been elusive. But for the first time, scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, have found a link between these hallmark maladies of old age. Their discovery opens the door to boosting the quality of sleep in elderly people to improve memory.

Postdoctoral fellow, Bryce Mander, demonstrates how the sleep study was conducted.

UC Berkeley neuroscientists have found that the slow brain waves generated during the deep, restorative sleep we typically experience in youth play a key role in transporting memories from the hippocampus -- which provides short-term storage for memories -- to the prefrontal cortex's longer term "hard drive."

However, in older adults, memories may be getting stuck in the hippocampus due to the poor quality of deep 'slow wave' sleep, and are then overwritten by new memories, the findings suggest.

"What we have discovered is a dysfunctional pathway that helps explain the relationship between brain deterioration, sleep disruption and memory loss as we get older -- and with that, a potentially new treatment avenue," said UC Berkeley sleep researcher Matthew Walker, an associate professor of psychology and neuroscience at UC Berkeley and senior author of the study to be published Jan. 27, in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

The findings shed new light on some of the forgetfulness common to the elderly that includes difficulty remembering people's names.

"When we are young, we have deep sleep that helps the brain store and retain new facts and information," Walker said. "But as we get older, the quality of our sleep deteriorates and prevents those memories from being saved by the brain at night."

Healthy adults typically spend one-quarter of the night in deep, non-rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep. Slow waves are generated by the brain's middle frontal lobe. Deterioration of this frontal region of the brain in elderly people is linked to their failure to generate deep sleep, the study found.

The discovery that slow waves in the frontal brain help strengthen memories paves the way for therapeutic treatments for memory loss in the elderly, such as transcranial direct current stimulation or pharmaceutical remedies. For example, in an earlier study, neuroscientists in Germany successfully used electrical stimulation of the brain in young adults to enhance deep sleep and doubled their overnight memory.

UC Berkeley researchers will be conducting a similar sleep-enhancing study in older adults to see if it will improve their overnight memory. "Can you jumpstart slow wave sleep and help people remember their lives and memories better? It's an exciting possibility," said Bryce Mander, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at UC Berkeley and lead author of this latest study.

For the UC Berkeley study, Mander and fellow researchers tested the memory of 18 healthy young adults (mostly in their 20s) and 15 healthy older adults (mostly in their 70s) after a full night's sleep. Before going to bed, participants learned and were tested on 120 word sets that taxed their memories.

As they slept, an electroencephalographic (EEG) machine measured their brain wave activity. The next morning, they were tested again on the word pairs, but this time while undergoing functional and structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) scans.

In older adults, the results showed a clear link between the degree of brain deterioration in the middle frontal lobe and the severity of impaired "slow wave activity" during sleep. On average, the quality of their deep sleep was 75 percent lower than that of the younger participants, and their memory of the word pairs the next day was 55 percent worse.

Meanwhile, in younger adults, brain scans showed that deep sleep had efficiently helped to shift their memories from the short-term storage of the hippocampus to the long-term storage of the prefrontal cortex.

Co-authors of the study are William Jagust, Vikram Rao, Jared Saletin and John Lindquist of UC Berkeley; Brandon Lu of the California Pacific Medical Center and Sonia Ancoli-Israel of UC San Diego.

The research was funded by the National Institute of Aging of the National Institutes of Health.

In breast cancer metastasis, researchers identify possible drug target

Jan. 27, 2013 ? The spread of breast cancer to distant organs within the body, an event that often leads to death, appears in many cases to involve the loss of a key protein, according to UC San Francisco researchers, whose new discoveries point to possible targets for therapy.

In the January 27, 2013 online edition of Nature Cell Biology, UCSF scientists describe for the first time how the protein, known as GATA3 -- which is abnormal or absent in many cases of human breast cancer -- normally acts downstream in biochemical pathways to prevent the distant spread of cancer, an event called metastasis.

The discovery points to a biochemical control point that simultaneously holds in check several key events required for tumor cells to successfully spread.

"When GATA3 is present, it turns off many genes that are active in metastasis," said Zena Werb, PhD, a UCSF professor of anatomy who led the research. "We now have identified the molecular mechanisms involved."

The key finding of the new study is that GATA3 acts downstream biochemically to activate a molecule -- obscure until now -- called microRNA29b. MicroRNA29b in turn stops protein production from other genes that play vital roles in metastasis.

The absence or loss of GATA3 can free cancerous cells to break free from their defined roles and tethers within a tumor, to move away from the tumor mass, to induce cancer-promoting inflammation, and to stimulate the development of new blood vessels that can help spreading cancerous cells regrow as tumors in new locations.

"People knew that some of these genes were turned on in some cancers, but they did not know they were turned on because GATA3 and microRNA29b were turned off," Werb said. "If you have 20 genes that are becoming less active all at once due to microRNA29b, it could have a profound effect."

Working with mice, the researchers found that restoring microRNA29b to one of the most deadly types of breast cancer stopped metastasis. But the researchers also found that if they knocked out the microRNA29b, tumors spread even in the presence of GATA3, suggesting that microRNA29b can be the driver of metastasis.

In the mouse models of breast cancer studied by Werb's team, GATA3 normally restrains cancerous cells from breaking away from the main tumor and migrating to other organs.

It might be possible, Werb said, to develop drugs that inhibit breast cancer metastasis by re-activating these controls in cancerous cells that have lost the normal protein.

Many researchers who study early stages of cancer focus on abnormal genes and proteins that cause cells to expand their numbers rapidly, a hallmark of cancer.

However, the ability to spread to distant places and to eventually cause lethal complications requires not only cell division and tumor growth, but also changes in how the cancerous cell negotiates with its surroundings. This relationship must be altered to permit cancer to spread, according to earlier research findings by Werb and others.

"Many of the key processes in cancer that GATA3 suppresses take place outside the cell, in the surrounding environment," she said.

GATA3 is a master control for luminal cells, which line the milk-carrying ducts of the breast. In essence, GATA3 dictates the defining characteristics of a normal breast cell, Werb said.

Luminal breast cancers are the most common form of the disease, and the hormones estrogen and progesterone drive their growth. Loss of the normal GATA3 protein as luminal breast cancers evolve is associated with a greater risk of death, Werb said, and occurs in roughly 10 percent of luminal breast cancer cases.

But, along with many other proteins, GATA3 also is absent in "triple negative," breast cancers, which are more often fatal. Triple negative breast cancers, which disproportionately affect black women and younger women, do not depend on the hormones, nor do they require a third growth factor, called HER2.

Triple negative breast cancers, which account for roughly one-in-five breast cancers, have been more difficult to target successfully with newer treatments.

"The targeting we would like to do is to give back microRNA29b specifically to breast tumor cells to prevent metastasis," Werb said.

Villanova Upsets Syracuse 75-71 In Overtime (VIDEO)

PHILADELPHIA ? Ryan Arcidiacono hit the tying 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, and James Bell hit consecutive 3s in overtime to send Villanova to its second win over a Top 5 team this week, 75-71 over No. 3 Syracuse on Saturday.

The Wildcats defeated No. 5 Louisville 73-64 on Tuesday and became the first unranked team to beat two Top 5 teams in the same season since Florida State in 2011-12, according to STATS LLC.

Arcidiacono's 3-point attempt to tie with about 25 seconds left in regulation was off the mark. Syracuse's Michael Carter-Williams missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and JayVaughn Pinkston of the Wildcats grabbed the rebound.

Bell missed a 3 and Mouphtaou Yarou grabbed the offensive rebound. Syracuse decided not to foul, giving Yarou time to kick it out to Arcidiacono. He let go a leaner from just beyond the 3-point line to tie the game at 61, force overtime and send the crowd into a frenzy.

With the Orange (18-2, 6-1 Big East) down two points in overtime, Brandon Triche made one free throw with 46.5 seconds left.

Bell followed with a layup to for a 71-68 lead and the Wildcats (13-7, 4-3) held on from the free throw line.

Philly's college fans came down with a case of court-storming fever this week after Villanova's win over Louisville and La Salle's 54-53 win the next night over No. 9 Butler. At the Wells Fargo Center, home of the NHL's Flyers, the fans made it a Philly hoops hat trick, rushing the court in celebration of one of the biggest regular-season weeks in Villanova history.

Florida State beat No.3 North Carolina and No. 4 Duke in its big week.

Darrun Hilliard scored 25 points and Yarou had 14 points and 16 rebounds for the Wildcats while Bell scored 13 points.

Triche led the Orange with 23 points and Carter-Williams scored 17 points. The Orange had an eight-game winning streak and both of their losses came to Philadelphia teams. They lost to Temple on Dec. 22.

The Orange clearly could have use James Southerland in the tight game. Southerland, second on the team in scoring at 13.6 points and the team leader with 33 3-pointers, was declared out indefinitely because of an eligibility matter involving academics that has yet to be resolved.

Jerami Grant, who played well in Southerland's absence, fouled out with 5:22 left and the Orange up one. His fifth foul was against Hilliard. Hilliard missed both from the line, the Orange stormed down in transition off the defensive board, and Triche hit a 3 for a 57-53 lead.

The Orange just could never put them away. They missed six of eight shots in overtime and were only 5 of 14 overall from 3-point range.

Grant's 3-pointer early in the second half gave the Orange their first lead of the game, 33-32.

The Wildcats gave all the students standing behind each basket and dressed in white an early reason to think they would be rushing again. They opened the game on a 10-0 run and stretched the lead to 25-13. But the fun didn't last long.

Triche, a 50 percent shooter on the season, hit Syracuse's first 3-pointer of the half to slice the lead to four. He tipped in a basket at the buzzer to cut the lead to 32-26.

Syracuse missed 10 of its first 14 shots and finished at 29 percent for the half.

Silver News: Will Silver Outperform Gold and Platinum in 2013 ...

Listen to veteran precious metals advisor Tom Cloud as he explains what lies ahead for gold, silver, palladium, and platinum prices. In silver news, Tom explains why he believes silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Gold News: German Repatriation
? Germany allegedly holds 11% of the world?s gold supply. The U.S. is #1 with 26%.
? Germany is now demanding much of its gold held at the Federal Reserve to be returned to Frankfurt.
? The Federal Reserve reacted by saying it would return Germany?s gold within 7 years.
? Why would it take so long to return the gold to Germany unless the Federal Reserve doesn?t have all the gold?
? Netherlands now thinking about asking for its gold back from the Federal Reserve as well.
? What does this mean for gold investors? It?s good for the price of gold ? More pressure on the physical gold market.

    Silver News
? U.S. Mint cut off the sale of Silver Eagle Coins after only 2 1/2 weeks into 2013.
? U.S. Mint will not resume sales until next week; plus, the premium charged by the U.S. Mint on these coins is now higher at $0.50/oz
? Canadian Maple Leaf also has an increased premium at $0.25/oz
? The good deals in silver right now are the Silver Buffalo and the Silver Morgan 1-ounce silver bars.
? Many forecasters believe silver will outperform the other metals in 2013.

    Palladium News
? The price is now in the $720s to $730s. If you were patient throughout the past several months, you are now seeing a nice rise in your palladium holdings.
? With many countries continuing quantitative easing (money printing) in 2013, and with no worldwide recession, I believe palladium should easily reach in the $800s in the next couple of months

    Platinum News
? Platinum ended the year 2012 as the best performing metal, but this year (2013) many forecasters are expecting platinum to be second behind silver

    Markets
? Debt ceiling increase should have a positive impact on the metals markets.
? The U.S. borrows $4.2 billion per day more than it takes in revenue. The deficit is going up continually. All this is great for the price of gold.
? Japan is also moving toward quantitative easing with its new leadership, which is also great for the metals.

Militant groups clash in Pakistan, 24 killed

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) ? 'Two Islamic militant groups clashed Saturday over control of a prized valley in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 24 people and wounding dozens more, officials said.

Arshad Khan of the Khyber tribal region said the fighting between the two Islamic militant groups began Friday in Tirah valley, near the Afghan border, when the militant group, Tehrik-e-Taliban, captured the base of another militant group, Ansarul Islam. Ansarul Islam tried to retake the base and fighting continued into Saturday.

The Pakistani military has been battling a stubborn insurgency in northwest Pakistan in rugged tribal regions bordering Afghanistan.

The remote valley, tucked in mountainous terrain, is highly valued by militant groups as a base of operations. It's difficult for the Pakistani military to enter the area, which allows militants easy access to Afghanistan and other tribal areas of Pakistan.

Most of the dead were militants, but some local tribesmen also were killed, according to a Pakistani military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to disclose the information to the media.

In Baluchistan province in the south, government troops have been waging a longtime struggle against Baloch nationalists, who demand a greater share of income generated from mineral and gas resources there.

On Saturday, a large group of armed men attacked a post manned by pro-government tribal militia members in a remote area in southwestern Baluchistan, killing two tribesmen and abducting seven more. The post is 300 miles (500 kilometers) northeast of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but Baluch nationalists often target government forces and their supporters.

Local administrator Noor Illahi Bugti said dozens of armed men attacked the post, shot and killed two of the tribesmen and then forced the others to surrender. He said seven of the militia volunteers were then taken away by the armed group.

Bugti said security forces rushed to the area and were searching for the militia volunteers.

What will Michelle Obama do with four more years?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Michelle Obama has a new look, both in person and online, and with the president's re-election, she has four more years as first lady, too.

That's got many people wondering: What will she do with them?

Take on a new cause? Travel more? Trace the path of another first lady and keep the Obama political brand alive by running for office?

The answers are to be determined.

The first lady is trying to figure out what comes next for this self-described "mom in chief" who also is a champion of healthier eating, an advocate for military families, a fitness buff and the best-selling author of a book about her White House garden.

For certain, she'll press ahead with her well-publicized efforts to reduce childhood obesity and rally the country around its service members.

"But beyond that, the first lady is exploring ways that she can make a real difference for Americans, not just for these next four years, but for years to come," said Kristina Schake, Mrs. Obama's communications director.

Here are five areas to watch.

___

NEW ISSUES

Will she take on a new cause? It's possible.

When Parade magazine asked last year whether she'd take up any new issues, Mrs. Obama identified women's health issues. "How do we strengthen families and make them healthier, an issue not just in America but around the world," she said.

Her marquee causes ? the "Let's Move" campaign against childhood obesity and the "Joining Forces" effort to help military families ? took a back seat last fall as she campaigned doggedly for President Barack Obama's re-election.

Look for her to begin publicizing those efforts anew.

Do not expect to see Mrs. Obama push more contentious issues such as gun control or immigration, both second-term priorities for the president. Her public approval rating was 73 percent in a December poll by CNN and she'd like to keep it there.

Some feminists remain unhappy that the Ivy League-educated lawyer hasn't used her position to champion what they view as more substantive issues.

Robert Watson, an American studies professor at Lynn University, said he hopes Mrs. Obama will use her popularity to pivot away from the "velvet-glove" issues first ladies typically embrace and say, "I'm swinging for the fence."

___

MALIA AND SASHA

Obama's daughters are older and will be in full teenage mode by the summer of 2014. Malia is already there at 14; sister Sasha is 11.

Both the president and first lady sometimes talk about the girls' busy lives and how they don't want to spend much time with their parents anymore.

Could having older, more independent children free Mrs. Obama to pursue other interests? Some first lady watchers say that's unlikely. After all, the teenage years are often full of angst about dating, proms, learning how to drive, going to college and so on.

"Michelle has made such a public statement about being the 'mom in chief' that it's hard to see her saying, 'Go ahead girls, here's the limo,'" Watson said.

Malia will graduate from high school during Obama's final year in office, in 2016, and probably trade the White House for a college dorm. She and her parents will have to navigate the college application process and campus tours. Sasha will be in high school.

___

TRAVEL

Presidents and first ladies often step up the pace of international travel in the second term. But it seems unlikely that Obama could make such a pivot just yet, with the U.S. public still so concerned about the economy, unemployment and government spending.

One option would be to send Mrs. Obama abroad in his place.

The first lady is popular overseas and has been well-received outside the U.S., including in India, where she accompanied the president in 2010, and in Mexico, also in 2010, and in South Africa and Botswana in 2011, the only countries she has visited alone as first lady.

She and Vice President Joe Biden's wife, Jill, traveled together to Haiti after the massive earthquake there in January 2010.

Mrs. Obama also went to Spain in the summer of 2010 on a personal trip with friends and daughter Sasha, but her stay at a luxury resort on the Costa del Sol wasn't well-received back home, raising questions about the cost and wisdom of taking such a trip during tough economic times.

Laura Bush pursued a grueling foreign travel schedule during George W. Bush's second term. She visited 77 countries in eight years as first lady, including with the president, but 67 of those trips came during the second term, including solo stops in Afghanistan and Saudi Arabia, according to Anita McBride, her then-chief of staff who runs American University's first ladies program.

Hillary Rodham Clinton also traveled abroad extensively during Bill Clinton's second term.

___

RUN FOR PUBLIC OFFICE

Will she or won't she? Despite Mrs. Obama's many denials of interest in seeking elected office herself, the question keeps getting asked. A recent survey found her to be more popular than Mark Kirk, the Republican senator from her home state of Illinois, in a hypothetical matchup.

"I have no interest in politics. Never have, never will," the first lady said last year on ABC's "The View."

But even those who at one time say "never" can later change their minds.

Hillary Clinton gave the same answer in 1995 when asked if she'd ever run for public office, says Myra Gutin, who studies first ladies at Rider University. But five years later, as her husband's presidency was ending, there was Clinton campaigning across New York for a Senate seat.

She won, used her time in the Senate as a springboard for her 2008 presidential campaign but lost the Democratic nomination to Barack Obama. She became his secretary of state but is departing soon amid feverish speculation that she will run for president in 2016.

Mrs. Obama will be young ? 53 years old ? when her husband leaves office in January 2017, and will have a range of options ahead of her. Friends say she has always believed there are ways to serve the country without running for office.

___

PERSONAL STYLE

Look for the first lady to continue to be a fashion trendsetter. Everything from her hair to her clothes is scrutinized, with some clothing pieces selling out quickly after she's seen wearing them.

Her new bangs became the talk of this town immediately after she went public with them on her 49th birthday, a few days before the president began his second term. Even the president said his wife's haircut was "the most significant event" of inaugural weekend and gave his approval.

Mrs. Obama also won largely positive reviews for her inaugural wardrobe: Reed Krakoff and Thom Browne by day, and Michael Kors and Jason Wu by night. Wu designed her red chiffon and velvet ball gown. He also designed the white ball gown she wore four years ago.

She also has a new presence on Twitter ? (at)FLOTUS.

Numark NS7 II Serato DJ controller hands-on (video)

Numark NS7 II Serato DJ controller hands-on

Like buttons? Numark at NAMM evidently thinks they are this season's DJ must have. The latest bit of kit to get the manual-input makeover? Its NS7 II Serato DJ controller. The second iteration of its motorized-platter DJ tool lands augmented with 16 "MPC-style" pads. Of course, when you are part of the same corporation that also makes the MPC, swinging these sort of add-ons must be a little easier. Those pads will be assignable to a host of features (cues, loop, roll, sampler, and slicer) in the Serato DJ software (sadly not ready for a demo with the hardware at this time). Of course, the NS7 II is all MIDI compatible, so if your software of choice is something else, then you are free to map and a buse as you wish. That's not all, you might notice in the picture above that the pads have some jazzy colors going on. They are have RGB illumination which can be set and customized to your choice by MIDI data. It's not all about the pads though. Numark has also added touch functionality to a lot of the rotaries. So, if you have one set to control a filter, you can just tap the tip of the control to trigger it on / off. The last of the big news is that with the NS7 II, you can also control four virtual decks. A nice addition for the fast-fingered DJs out there. We ran into the device on the show floor and spent some time with it. Head past the break for more.

If you ever got your hands on the original NS7, you'll know that it is quite the machine. Big, heavy, covered in controls, and most famously, sporting fully motorized 7-inch platters. It's this curious mix of new and old methodology that pretty much sums up the Serato DJ software it is designed to work with. With the NS7 II, it's basically more of the same. The hardware is built like a tank, the platters feel authentic enough to bring back nostalgia (even if it's in smaller, 7-inch form). The MPC buttons look and feel great too. Intense mashing and finger / thumb abuse? These look more than capable at taking it by the bucket load. The color effect is pleasing to the eye. We're not sure how important it will be in real world application, but if you like to mark out your triggers and samples, this will let you do that. And what the heck, it just looks pretty sweet -- never a bad thing. As for the touch-enabled rotaries? Well, sadly we'll just have to imagine how they work, as there was no connected software for us to test them out. We're imagining it to be a handy feature, none the less. The same applies to the four deck functionality. We were unable to test it, but it's utilitarian enough that we welcome the addition. Each of the two hardware platters has a pair of buttons beneath it letting you switch between decks easily. These buttons are again, solid and firm, letting you get carried away without damaging your new pride and joy.

Prospective buyers will be pleased to know that as Numark has done before, the unit also contains a full independent mixer. This means you can plug in CDJs, turntables and more and bring them into your set without problem. That mixer is also somewhat larger this time around, thanks to the extra two channels it sports for the four decks. This also serves to enhance its chunky, no messin' look and feel. We'd love to have spent some time actually using it, but alas it wasn't to be. We did manage to grab some video of the hardware though, so head south to take a look of that, while we patiently wait for price and availability information.

Learn How To Run An Affiliate Marketing Program | Internet ...

Not only must you and your business be seen, but you must also imprint your differences versus others working a similar niche, whom have been around much longer. Yet, even with all the differences from company to company, there are some core bits that remain similar in those that make good profits and a few are listed here.

If you are watching your affiliate stats, you should be watching where the links perform the best also. Test your link on different parts of the page and compare the results. Only change the position of the link; don?t change a single other thing about the content.

Beginning affiliate marketing sometimes requires a financial investment to reap a profit. Put some money back into the business by advertising with other sites and services. There are three sites that are the best for advertising: Facebook, Yahoo, and Google.

Set small, daily goals in order to better assist with your particular affiliate marketing strategy. This will make tasks easily accessible, and may help motivate you.

Think of things to add when you are picking affiliates. Take it even further by considering items, such as water containers, that can be easily accessed.

Back-end sales are also essential to being successful for your affiliate marketing. You should get commissions on items that you refer customers to. Only do business with companies who offer you a fair commission.

Improve your success in affiliate marketing by building an extensive network. These tools can help connect great advertisers to webmasters. One of the benefits of an affiliate network is that it can help to build credibility and respect. If you choose an established network, your will get a good reputation.

Be wary of vendors who want you to utilize their tracking system; in many cases, this is a scam. Make sure you use a good, legitimate tracking system.

When it comes to affiliate marketing, honesty is the best policy. People aren?t going to become loyal customers if you aren?t honest with them. Being dishonest with your audience can lead to them distrusting you and avoiding your links.

Your company?s current online marketing strategy can be greatly improved upon by adding affiliate marketing programs. Affiliate programs have been shown to generate much more site traffic than passive methods such as banner advertisements. When looking at affiliate programs, consider how much you will get for referrals, how popular the directory is and how easy it is to navigate.

Use screenshots and recommendations for your products. Since your customers cannot physically touch or see the product you need to provide them with as much information as possible.

You can make most profits when you use paid ads. If you buy ads that target keywords, you will boost traffic to your website and increase sales. This will add to the pool of potential customers you have.

Explain to your readers why your affiliates are a good fit for you and for them. They will be happy that you were honest, and become more loyal as a result.

In the world of affiliate marketing, the product review is key. Make every effort to enhance yours by adding content such as video, endorsements, reviews and other content that portray the product in a positive light. People will want to buy your product because it is so appealing. Include details in your review. People need to know exactly what they are buying, especially if they can not actually touch it or use it before the purchase.

Be as honest as you can and let your followers and readers know that when they purchase through you that you make a portion of the profits. You should not attempt to deceive customers with affiliate links because many of them will know you are not being honest and they will not trust to do any business with you. Customers appreciate honesty, and you can increase the likelihood that they will return?and click on your links?by working to gain their trust.

Text services can help affiliates earn more commissions. Even though text services are still fairly new, many affiliates apply this service in order to ensure their customers stay informed, as well as to advertise new products to customers.

To be a successful in affiliate marketing, it is very crucial that you remain relevant. Be certain you always know about the latest deals and offers with your affiliate programs. New tools are implemented constantly to improve the useability of different kinds of affiliate programs that make advertisements more appealing to its readers.

Lifetime commissions for affiliate marketing programs have never been so difficult to lock down. Since the profit from this type of commission is high, it will still be worthwhile to try to manage the commission into your sale. Webmasters get a cut on products sold through affiliates. In most cases, a commission is given only if the purchase is made in a specified period of time. This makes them extremely popular in the industry.

As an affiliate marketer, you represent your current and future businesses as a whole; which requires an honest attitude at all times. Inform your readers about affiliate programs you promote, especially if you are writing articles, reviews or blog entries that include your affiliate links. If your visitors don?t trust you, they won?t purchase through your site.

A great tip for affiliate marketers who have started to generate money is not to be satisfied with what they have accomplished. Keep your sights set on bigger things and higher goals. Consider creating another blog or any other website as a means to generate more income. Most importantly, never give up on your online business venture.

Study up on the possibility of joining referral programs if your affiliate marketing partnerships make them available. By referring other people to their companies, you could receive higher compensation rewards from these established businesses. Many sites will offer commissions on referred sales. If you are a busy company you can perhaps refer a affiliate to them.

These types of methods are employed for a reason: they provide results and pull in the intended customer. All you have to figure out is how to apply them to the position you?re interested in.

Acupuncture an increasingly popular therapy for pets | NolaVie - Life ...

To listen to Sharon Litwin's interview with Dr. Cynthia Benbow on WWNO-FM, click here.

Snoopy the cat gets an acupuncture session.

It was Dr. Cynthia Benbow?s father who finally put it all into perspective. You can?t talk a dog into feeling better, he said to her. There?s no placebo effect with an animal. So if you stick in a needle and it makes the dog feel better, then there must be something to it, he reasoned.

The ?it?, of course, is acupuncture -- until fairly recently, not something embraced by large numbers of the professional veterinary community. Even Dr. Benbow, now an advocate, admits to being a skeptic.

?I thought it was a bunch of voodoo,? she says. But that was before she investigated animal acupuncture at the University Of Colorado Veterinary School.

Now a certified animal acupuncturist, she has learned how this ancient Chinese method of inserting tiny thin needles into a precise location helps to ease pain.

?Animals today are living much longer,? she says. ?Many are on pain medications or supplements because they have arthritis and there?s nothing more that can be done for them. So we will use acupuncture and it really helps. The Chinese actually use acupuncture as a preventive and, while I do see a couple of puppies whose owners are doing that, there aren?t many others.?

She doesn?t just treat cats and dogs, though. There are all kinds of exotic pets that need a little help, froms tiny creatures like birds to huge ones like horses.

?Interestingly, the wilder the animal, the better they do,? Benbow says. ?Birds and horses respond really well; they?ll fall asleep right away. I?ve treated horses that have come in lame and been able to walk out afterward. Dogs, while better responders than humans, don?t respond as well as cats.?

Dogs respond well to acupuncture; cats, even better.

Dr. Benbow thinks that?s because dogs are more domesticated. But, she says, they will respond to acupuncture, although it might take two or three sessions before they do so fully.

?I remember I had this one police dog that was pretty aggressive and I could only place about three needles in on the first visit,? Benbow recalls. ?The second visit, I snuck in about five or six. On the third visit, that dog came up to me and sat down as if to say, put those needles in. That dog knew he was going to feel better. It?s like my father said: There?s no placebo effect in an animal.?

For more information about animal acupuncture, visit the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society at www.ivas.org or the Chi Institute of Chinese Medicine at www.tcvm.org. Dr. Benbow can be reached at benbowvetservice@gmail.com or 504-281-4288.

In the video below,?Lacey, a 6-year-old miniature schnauzer who does competitive agility competitions, gets an acupuncture session from Dr. Benbow. It shows how relaxing acupuncture can be: She yawns a lot during her sessions.

"This yawn tells me she is getting her endorphin release and she is responding to acupuncture," Benbow notes. "This particular patient, before putting needles in her, was hiding under a chair, trembling, anxious and not wanting to come by us. As you can see she is now relaxed, not being restrained, and enjoying us."

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Kaepernick runs off the field after throwing a touchdown pass against the Green Bay Packers during their NFL NFC Divisional playoff football game in San FranciscoReuters

Ravens coach John Harbaugh says the game plan for stopping 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick comes down to this: Don?t let him get to the outside, and when you have a shot at him, don?t miss the tackle.

?We?re going to have to tackle him. We?re going to have to keep him inside of our defense,? Harbaugh said at his press conference today. ?We?re not going to be able to run past him. He?s fully capable of putting 200 yards on you, just as capable as Frank Gore is or any of their running backs. He?s not just an integral part of their passing game, he?s a huge part of their run game. We?ll have a plan for it. Assignment football is going to be really important for us. Change-ups are going to be important for us. We just have to play well against him.?

Harbaugh was asked about the Ravens? regular-season loss to the Redskins, in which Robert Griffin III led two first-quarter touchdown drives but was largely kept in check after that before ultimately getting knocked out of the game with a knee injury late in the fourth quarter. Harbaugh said he liked the way his defense was able to adjust against the Redskins, but he cautioned that the 49ers? offense and the Redskins? offense are not the same thing.

?We did a pretty good job in that game once we got our feet on the ground against RG3,? Harbaugh said. ?They took the first two drives down there but once we had a feel for the offense I thought we did OK. It?s a similar offense, style-wise, but it?s not the same offense by any stretch so it?s hard to compare those two games. Just the way they run the offense, the foundation of the offense is different, it?s not the same base offense, and even the blocking schemes and the read-option stuff is a bit different. And even the style of play of the two quarterbacks, they?re both great in their own right, but they bring different things to the table.?

One area where preparing for Griffin is similar to preparing for Kaepernick is that Dennis Dixon is the scout-team quarterback for both. The Ravens? coaches praised Dixon before the Redskins game for the way he used his experience as a read-option quarterback at Oregon to help Baltimore?s defense prepare for Griffin, and Harbaugh said today that Dixon is now playing the Kaepernick role in practice.

?Dennis will be a big part of that for us. He understands the scheme and the reads and things like that, so he?s very valuable for us,? Harbaugh said.

If Dixon?s help keeps Kaepernick closer to the 21 rushing yards he had against the Falcons than the 181 he had against the Packers, that would make Dixon very valuable indeed.

Now, with the addition of iTech and its talented team, Hargray will also offer a full suite of managed services.

"Acquiring iTech will enable us to expand the set of business communications and IT services we bring to our customers not only in Savannah but also in South Carolina," said Andrew Rein, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hargray. "These products include managed IT services, data storage and backup, IP telephony and unified communications, and hosted services. Further, Hargray is uniquely positioned in the market with local technical support, customer care, and account executive personnel, which allows for faster response times, the highest level of reliability, custom engineering solutions, and on-site operational system design."

George Powers, owner of iTech, said, "We are very proud of the business we built over the last few years under Alastair's leadership and now is the right time for iTech to join a larger organization that will allow it to accelerate its growth. I am grateful to our customers for entrusting to us their IT needs and I am certain our level of service will only get better through affiliation with Hargray."

The acquisition is due to close on January 31, 2013. Terms were not disclosed.
